Best Beach Town For 1 Night?
I will have a extra day after attending a conference in Gainsville and was looking at St. Augustine for its history, but any beach close by would be fine. Any suggestions for hotels, restaurants, bars would be appreciated.

The closest beaches to Gainesville are the St. Augustine area beaches. My personal favorite is Crescent Beach which can be found at the intersection of SR 206 & A1A. http://www.insideflorida.com/detail/crescent-beach/

You don't mention what time of year. If it's summer, I second St Augustine beaches, Crescent in particular. We have rented condos there but it's been a few years. If it's winter, Gainesville is pretty close to the Gulf side and you might find the water warmer, if not exactly swimmable. We've spent several weeks on Cedar Key but it's not known for its beaches.
The inlaws live a bit further south and favor Fort Island beach but I'm not sure it's a place you can stay.
