$20 trick in Miami

I read on another site that the $20 trick (or maybe in 2016 the $50 trick) is fairly commonplace for upgrades in the Miami/FLL area - can anyone validate this? Curious to hear any success stories...

When I worked in hotels, we called this a bribe. It was grounds for immediate termination.

It worked at Joe's Store Crab in the 90's but it was the $100 trick! $20 would get you a seat a the bar and a two hour wait

^^^

Please don't encourage such things in this country. The hotel owners have invested their capital in the business, and those $20 tricks essentially give the rewards of that investment to others.

While the US isn't seriously corrupt, every one of these tiny transactions moves it in the wrong direction.

It tried it once in Miami and it didn't work. I got very dirty looks from the management as well.

Works in NYC & LA too. But, unless you're looking for an UG at a Red Roof Inn (whatever an UG is), it's well north of $50 !

How do you do the trick? Is it like a magic trick?

What sort of upgrade is this 'trick' mean to secure for you? An upgrade to business class? A table with a view? The presidential suite? Sounds like a bribe to me.

I want to know too. Why is it a trick and not a tip.

The only other trick I know would be one I wouldn't want for $20 bucks!
