Have a look at Longboat Key/Anna Maria Island. An easy drive up on I75 to Sarasota or Bradenton then over one of the three bridges to the island. LBK is very quiet and IMO is geared more towards residents/snowbirds. But St Armands Circle at the south of LBK is full of (expensive) shops and restaurants and the odd bar. There is a trolley bus that runs up and down the both islands but last bus is around 8pm.
There is a Hilton on LBK other than that that the majority of accommodation is self catering. Anna Maria would probably suit a family/younger person better - more restaurants and shops. Anna Maria would be likely to have more short term rentals available.
