i'm planning a trip from Australia and i've got 3 days (or less) to get from Washington DC to Orlando (timing is driven by other must do's and the May 2010 shuttle launch that i am hoping to attend)
Any suggestions for how to do the trip / what to see / where to stay would be appreciated.
Currently looking at Amtrak overnight but i realise that way i won't see much except at each end....
it is usually a cheaper ticket if you want to fly - southwest covers the route as an LCC, as well as other mainline (and LCC) carriers. The drive is 18-20 hrs and all boring highway. There is plenty to do around DC and Orlando to cover your three days, so perhaps the two general vicinities would be enough for the trip
Definitely fly. The drive or train will take up most of your available time. Rent a car once in Orlando. Just be aware that many of the shuttle launches never go on time. So don't have your heart set on it happening as a certainty.
You don't say if you want any of the theme parks. If so, the on-site hotels are not the cheapest but give a good experience for such a short time frame. For only a couple of days I like Universal Studios over Disney. Stay at the Royal Pacific and get front of the line access all day, all the time on every attraction. A big plus!

This is my second attempt at seeing a shuttle launch - the last one i went to in July got cancelled a few times (weather) and i had to leave before it went up so i'm aware it might not happen.
The thing i wasn't sure about was whether there was anything to see on the way from DC to Orlando - from your replies sounds like there isn't so we'll fly !!

Well, actually there are some interesting places to stop along the way (e.g. Charleston, Savannah, St. Augustine) but with only three days, those places seem to be out of the question. The drive down I-95 (without sightseeing stops) will consume the better part of two precious days. That is why the suggestions to fly make so much sense. GoingAway is correct that there is plenty to see and do in Orlando and Washington, D.C.

Interestingly cheaper to fly DCA - Orlando via MIA than it was to fly only DCA - MIA (on the same flight). Weird........
Not weird... typical. AA is pretty much the only game in town between DCA/IAD and MIA but between DCA/IAD and MCO, there are about 20 nonstops so AA is at a disadvantage on this route.
