Hi, I'm flying Royal Jordanian from Hong Kong to Bkk arriving at 22:35 and then I have another reservation on AY that leaves at 00:35. Are 2 hours sufficient? Will I be able to check the luggage in at HK directly through my final AY destination? Will I get the boarding cards as well?
thanks!
So you have two separate tickets for this trip. Hmm...
It should be possible to check luggage through, since both are oneworld carriers. Not sure about what the policy with boarding passes is in this type of case, but if the computer says no at the desk, you could always march to any public Internet terminal and check in online yourself.
If the question is "should I book like this" I would say no. But if you already booked, then most likely it will work out just fine. The risk is that the inbound gets delayed so much that you'd miss your connection, which could be negated by taking a travel insurance policy that covers for this (unless of course you have a fully flexible ticket on Finnair).
Luggge = no problem
2 hour Int'l to Int'l connection at Suvarnabhumi = no problem
BP = no problem (transit desk, computer or machine, if going landside)
2 PNRs = definitely a calculated risk here if not with flexible ticket and/or have a great travel insurance

I have done a TG HKG-BKK to QF connection at BKK with a 2 hour connection time with no issues. Providing you can get RJ to check your baggage all the way (which should be fine) you shouldn't have any issues.
You might want to call them as the OW policy is there but the reality is sometimes not... I have had multiple issues with Lan Chile with this... they have not been able to tag my bags through even when on same ticket/PNR, I have pushed a lot with supervisors etc. but no, sometimes they have not managed to do it...and w/o being able to identify to me why..that's even worse..
Then again, I have had Lan at LAX to issue the longest luggage tag of my personal history, a series of 5 flights (w/different flight numbers, all being internatioanl to international) over a time frame of ~55hours (2 separate luggage tags attached to my bag)...but that was all on LA so the issue is clearly with LA & other OW airlines..
But what would LAN tell you if you called them? "No, we're inept at this" is probably not the official company line.
When AY changed to a more restrictive policy (previously, they tagged the bags to any interlining airline even on separate PNRs), they stated that the reason for the change was that any mishaps that happened with the luggage would then be AY's responsibility to reimburse. So it's cheaper for the airline not to tag bags through, and some airlines may want to avoid doing that if they're not that worried about what that does to their customer experience. When it's all on the same airline, that's not a consideration, so suddenly the computer has no difficulty in the incredible feat of printing out any string of three-letter codes in a row.
Flew through BKK two weeks ago en route from KUL to LGW via DXB. MAS flight landed at 1915 and had plenty of time for the onward connection with EK. Managed to check the baggage all the way through from KUL to LGW even though I was on two separate tickets with different airlines. Checked the bags in at City Terminal in KL and saw them next at LGW.
Good point...calling them makes no sense, you're 100% right..anyway it's one of the main benefits of OW and I would imagine a recently added airline has had their audit done..
I've done a fair bit of OW flights over the last 10 years and LA has been the only airline not being able to do luggage check through at all times/stations so I'd imagine the odds for the OP are very high indeed.
