I can understand parking fees in downtown Calgary (or downtown of any crowded city,) but Banff (esp. 'cause the Fairmont is not even in town) or Lake Louise--NO WAY! Totally inappropriate anywhere open land is plentiful.

Depending upon when you are there ( evening/weekend) I've parked in the Telus Convention centre and its a $4 evening rate after 4 pm. I forget what the weekend rate is, but its not expensive, and cheaper than the valet charge at the Palliser.
I don't particularly like the Palliser Square parkade, its too close to one of the homeless drop in centres and thefts and vandaism do occur, plus its not an enclosed/heated parkade. It the winter, what's the point of paying to park outside? At least the Convention Centre is underground and heated, and its connected to the Palliser by the +15 network, so you don't have to walk outside.

Ive done that too. the evening rates in YYC are pretty reasonable for downtown but do park at the Telus Convention Centre and not the Pallier Parkade. Weekday rates at those parkades can run as high as the valet charge so be careful.
As for the parking charges in Lake Louise and Banff, the hotels do own the lots and because they are off in their own little worlds, they charge because they can. Where else are you supposed to park?

Was there the same Memorial Day weekend. Booked a Fairmont Gold floor room and was comped parking in the parking garage. For the extra $119 CAD or so for the Fairmont Gold Floor was well worth it - breakfast, afternoon tea and evening cocktails for two! Free in room internet too!
Was looking at the steep parking rates at these hotels:
...
Louise: $23/$25 (self/valet)
...
The Fairmont website now shows CAD 32 for self or valet. Does the rate go up in the summer or is the rate mentioned by OP the rate for president's club members?

Chateau Lake Louise is currently at:
Valet Parking
$35.00 per day, including tax, with in/out privileges.
Covered Parkade with winter plug-in available
Self Parking
$33.00 per day, including tax, with in/out privileges.
Covered Parkade with winter plug-in available
Complimentary parking for hybrid vehicles.
You are kinda forced to use the hotel parking in Lake Louise if you are staying there overnight. As pricey as it is, there is no where else you can really park the car legally overnight.
have fun in the Canadian Rockies!

There is a great parking lot to park in a 3 minute walk that is free.

I got free valet parking at Chateau Lake Louise when I used my free night cert + suite upgrade cert that came with my comp'ed Platinum membership. Don't know why it was free. But
Only stayed there one night and was given a nice top floor suite.
Whats the best place to park near Hotel Vancouver? A few months ago I just parked at the hotel but I was pulling a boat so $28 was a bargain for both units in my book. I almost expected a extra long vehicle charge but I guess my tips to the bellman kept them quiet. It was great knowing it was right outside the valet doors and cameras were rolling, brand new boat so I was slightly worried
In April I stayed 3 nights at the Banff Springs. I had a discussion with the check-in agent about parking when I arrived at 230am...in the end I decided to take the hotel parking but was never charged
Maybe I got the staff discount since I used to work there 11 years ago
Also, where exactly is the free parking at Lake Louise?
As you come up the hill from the village, at the top you can go straight through to the Chateau, or to the left for the public parking to see the lake. Park in the public parking and then it is a short walk to the hotel. I've parked there overnight and never had a problem.
Location: HPN/LGA/EWR, but never JFK (OK, sometimes, but always begrudgingly...).

The carpark in question in LL is owned by Parks Canada and is free so long as you have a parks pass, either daily or annual, displayed on your windscreen. Many hikers and backpackers use this lot for the local trails, so there are quite a few vehicles left overnight.
Insofar as the recommendations for Banff Springs, the street parking on the main entrance road (Spray St.) is limited until 2100. I'm not sure if this is enforced or not.
