What is the real story behind the staff at the Springs not being allowed to accept tips?

I've heard of a few reasons but am not sure if they are true.

The tip is included in the valet parking charge. I have not had other staff (ie. restaurant) refuse tips.

Your version is the official story I have heard too but I have also been told that the real reason is that some staff at one point were taking advantage of the Japanese guests. That is were the no tip policy came from.

This hotel has may seasonal workers that are there for a short period of time. I think that this led to the potential of abuse with regards to tips.

Anyone stayed at Banff Springs lately and have any poinions as to whether the buy-up from run of the mill Fairmont room to Fairmont view room worth it? The difference isn't huge but won't bother if its upgrading from virtually no view to parking lots view. Appreciate any feedback.

Without a doubt it is one of my favourite hotels. Rooms can be quite small and in some cases badly need an update, but the hotel itself is the pinnacle of the old Canadian CP style hotels. Fantastic location, stunning views, world-class spa, great amenities. You can literally spend a day or two just wandering the property... then spend the rest of your time at the spa. As a premier, this is one of the best benefits of the FPC program. They have a hungarian mineral pool, outside whirlpool and three variable temperature "waterfall" plunge pools, plus his/hers saunas, steam rooms, inhalation rooms etc. Top it all off with a small selection of complimentary snacks, coffee/tea, signature flavoured waters and fantastic spa amenities. There is something inherently relaxing about spending half a day using the facilities, then repeating it every day of your trip. By the second or third spa "session" my mind goes into a trance and I practically forget my own identity! The definition of relaxation and pampering, and completely free assuming you don't sign up for treatments.

Depending on your budget and needs, food can be amazingly inexpensive at this property. The property features an on-site conveniance store that sells a limited selection of groceries, an on-site liquor store, plus the 24-hr Castle Pantry which sells a wide range of meal options that are pretty decent quality (think high-class food on the go) for very reasonable prices. One of my favourite activities is to pick up breakfast from the Castle Pantry and eat on one of the outside terraces overlooking the Bow Valley. Of course, there are lots of expensive dining options as well.

In terms of view - the hotel sells two categories but of course there is lots of variation. In general, any of the higher floors will have a great view whether they are mountain or valley. However, the valley views are truly spectacular. In the event that you go with the mountain view, keep in mind that there are tons of public viewing areas (restaurants, terraces etc.) from which to enjoy this same view. I'm not sure if I could really justify more than a $60 premium per night for the valley view.

As a Platinum I have never experienced anything but a Bow Valley View

I am back for a "Spa session" on the October long weekend. They have recently added cookies to the free amenities in the resting lounge. This is bad since the cookies are really good

I would not pay more for a Valley view. Just put a request in the reservation. I spend most of my time in the Spa anyways! I also prefer the Main Building and always request this. The "servant's quarters", in the adjoining wings are a pain to get to and were sub-standard (I have heard they were recently renovated).

When I used a Suite Upgrade here in August I was upgraded to a HUGE suite on almost the top floor that had views in almost all directions, a dining table for 6 and a large sitting area. It also had a spa jetted tub!

They also just got all new cardio equipment in the gym - VERY nice!

PS - The welcome amenity of cheese and grapes has also been VERY good and of generous size

We're planning a first-timer's trip to Banff/Jasper during the week of US Memorial Day. I'd love to stay a few nights at some of the beautiful Fairmont hotels, especially Lake Louise, but the rack rate quoted at the site was a shocker.

I have no status at Fairmont, so other than fishing for a meeting or event to 'leech' on for their group rate, I'm hoping there is a promo out there which might knock the price down a bit.

Any suggestions on finding discounted rates or a promo would be greatly appreciated.

Fairmont usually launches a campaign in April with special summer offers. I'm not sure if you want to wait until then but the savings are usually worthwhile. They often have a value-add offer as well (either a Dining credit with American Express or Bonus Miles with their airline partners).

Thanks for the heads-up - I called them to book and was offered a AAA deal which took the $700/n room down to $520/n - at least we have a lakeview room booked and more reasonable rate, and can check for better offers as we get closer to arrival.

It can't hurt to join the Fairmont President's Club hotel loyalty program as they offer member-only rates, such as the Great Rates - Great Dates promo that will no doubt be around for May dates and may offer significant savings over not only rack rates but discounted AAA rates also.

Thanks for the tip! I just signed up with them now...if it shaves a couple hundred per night off my Lake Louise stay and offers a decent rate at their other Banff/Jasper properties, it's well worth it.

Indeed. Also by being even a basic or Club level of FPC (Fairmont President's Club) member you get free in-room high speed internet access.

Just so long as one does not rely on the Great rates being offered since they are often scattered on days that the hotel is not otherwise busy and I've not seen one for Louise for a while. If staying at Louise the Mt. Temple Wing will offer new and larger rooms with views of the lake (albeit a bit farther from the lake itself).

Virtuoso and Amex FHR have good rates and auto upgrades for Banff. No upgrades at Lake Louise, but still good rates. It might be worth looking at.
