CP Hangzhou Grand Canal also called CP Hai-wai-hai among local Hangzhou people. I stayed there this early Oct for a weekend (Fri to Sun) two nights stay. Paid 527.72 RMB for a King Superior incl. 10% service fee and 5% tax. I am a PLT-AMB so they upgraded me to King Superior Suite.

Room: @ 13 FL. Clean, spacious living room, walkin cloak room with the space to do ironing there. bed was good. no bathtub in my room, just a shower. no second toilet room. 2 LCD TVs and both are good quality and size 42"??

Service: very good. the staffs listen to you carefully and response promptly. I do speak Madarin so maybe that make some differences? They offer me postcard mailing for the postage fee only because they dont carry the stamp and I had no time to go post office. You usu. need to pay fat tip for such service in western countries.

Pool & Sauna: very clean and traffic usu. low according to the staff. I was the only one there from 9-1030AM Saturday.

Fu Cafe: The beef noodle soup at there can give you a quality quicky. Dont get the LongJin green tea there, over pricing. Staffs were very friendly.

Min Ren Min Jia Chinese restaurant: did not try but long wating during rush hours. Seems to be a good place.

Comments/suggestions: I was travelling alone so I'd rather to stay in the Club room to enjoy the club benefits than this spacious suite. They did not offer me to club even the price is cheaper than a suite. Also no breakfast offer to me. No bathtub in my room that was a surprise to me. Only city view from the room. Location is a bit far away from the downtown, takes 25 mins by overhead road (EXPWY) and can be longer during rush hour.

IC Hangzhou is going to open in 2010. I shall get a try and come back to report.

Holiday Inn 57th St.: High Marks

I just stayed at the Holiday Inn 57th Street for 4 nights, which is on W. 57th between 9th and 10th Avenues. I paid $157 per night (Nov. 11-15, 2009), AAA rate, which effectively works out to $175 per night with taxes. I booked on the Holiday Inn...

I just stayed at the Holiday Inn 57th Street for 4 nights, which is on W. 57th between 9th and 10th Avenues. I paid $157 per night (Nov. 11-15, 2009), AAA rate, which effectively works out to $175 per night with taxes. I booked on the Holiday Inn website about 60 days in advance. [About 30 days prior to arrival, the price quoted was higher, around $202.] It may well be possible to get a reasonable price for a fancier property on Priceline, but I didn't bother once I booked this rate. The rate seems lower due to the recession and may increase with a recovery.

I found this to be a great location and a decent place to stay. This is not a luxury hotel, but it offered clean rooms and efficient service. I have zero complaints. There is a $2 per bag storage charge.

Arrival from Newark Airport was via the Olympia Trails bus to the Port Authority bus terminal. then via A-C-E subway to 59th St., exiting at the 57th/8th SW corner exit, about 1 and 1/2 blocks from the hotel. On our return, we used the M11 bus down 9th Avenue. $27 for an unlimited MTA 1 week pass.

A great nearby breakfast restaurant was the Flame, on 9th at 58th. We liked it so much that we returned 3 more times.

It was an easy walk to Lincoln Center, about 6 short blocks (Metropolitan Opera). The theatre district and Central Park were also within easy walking distance.

The neighborhood has lots of restaurants and shops, and appeared very safe.

Crowne Plaza Hilton Head Island Resort

Stayed at the Crowne Plaza Hilton Head Island Resort recently and was positively surprised about the quality of the property, actually it has a 4 Diamond rating and also a huge trophy case in the lobby showcasing more than a dozen Torchbearer Awards and numerous other accolades.

Located in the Shipyard plantation, it is a 10-15 minute drive after you made it onto the island after a 15-20 minute drive from I95.

Used some free nights from a secondary account, so no status benefits whatsoever.

Check in was a breeze and I was given a room on the 2nd floor overlooking the valet parking area in a wing partly used for storing tables and chairs after some minor renovations. Hotel has interior corridors and a 5 or 6 story atrium, all room have balconies with two chairs and a table.

Rooms are really spacious, around 40 sqm. and my king standard room also had a sofa and minibar, unfortunately no fridge, but they where available on request, however at a fee. Bed was a new version of the sweet sleeper heavenly grand bed or however they call it at CP and it was comfy.

Speaking of fees, the resort fee is $ 13, but includes wired internet aside from the usual perks like free parking and a 10-15 % discount within the resort, also the restaurants, but excluding breakfast. It was actually waived, because of the award stay.

Van der Meer Tennis Academy is right next door, otherwise you need a car, even if you stay on the island, although the property also offers a shuttle, however their Chrysler Town & Country was probably not considered when the AAA granted the 4 Diamond rating...

A Fresh Market is about a mile away on the main road of the island, seemed to be the local version of Whole Foods.

Under the bottom line, I was actually quite satisfied. Comparing rates on HHI, the property charged $ 129 and was appr. 20 % cheaper in comparison to the Hilton, which is an all junior suite property and Marriott, which used to be a Hyatt. The Westin was 40 % more expensive, but used to run some serious promotions this year making it the cheapest 4 Diamond resort on the island, at just $ 89.

Otherwise, the CP is a good alternative to the better known and slighlty more luxurious competition on the island and far superior to the ICH alternative, the Holiday Inn. The CP is a real resort with extensive grounds, paths around the resort, pools ( no spa however ) whereas the Holiday Inn is more or less your regular Holiday Inn property which happens to be located on an island.
