Got my hands on a G11 a few weeks ago.

I was already working with the G9 but I become an early-adopter of the G11 because the new DIGIC4 technology, equiv 28mm W to 140mm T lens & the Canon-inferred better imagery at higher ISO caught my imagination ( helps that I was wholly satisfied with the G9 & I take Canon at their word about the improvements ).

Thus far, I'm quite happy with the G11. It has a flip/swivel LCD display & functions mostly like the G9 ( a few changes in placement schemes ). I've not sat down and done a careful low light pixel analysis, but my fiddling around has produced some good off hand results as I compare it to my in-hand G9 results. Part of the low light pixel solution involves a retreat to 10 Mpx ( from 12.4 on the G9 ).

So I'm quite satisfied with the purchase & I'm enjoying all of the manual control & flexibility that the G11 offers. It's a good solution for folks who want a robust, full-featured P&S which is rugged & allows you to travel P&S light. It's not a DSLR, but the G11 will assuage my own urges to move up to the DSLR platform. I've gotten spoiled by the lighter camera kit & the G11 will help me make another couple of years before pondering that DSLR transition.

However, it's got a problem. The aperture is stuck wide open. I'm guessing some oil got in there. It's usually not a problem for me, as I like to shoot wide open. But I decided that maybe I should bother getting it fixed.

Here in PR there is literally a single person who offers camera/lens repair services. And since he has a monopoly, the prices are ridiculously high.

My travel schedule it putting me in MIA, PTY, and LA/OC over the next month or so. Any recommended places in these cities? Or any recommended places online to send it to?

single lense for Nikon DSLR - help please

OK.... so after not buying any Camera stuff for over 4 years, I bought my Nikon D300 a couple of months ago... and Im now in the market for one nice new lens. I do have quite a bit of glass in my camera bag but the newest pieces are already 4-5 years old, so Im not being able to use all the functionality of my camera body.... hence its time to upgrade !!! :D

I would ask the resident Nikon experts to point me in the right direction..... here are my guidelines for what Im looking for:

a) zoom lens with a solid fixed max aperture

b) I dont mind a heavy/bulky lense - I want top quality glass & specs

c) Im quite flexible with my budget

d) VR is highly desireable

e) Im looking for a zoom that includes proper wide angle coverage (a low teen zoom range would be good)

So... what say the experts...??? What are the top 2-3 options for something like this...?

Thanks,

Hi! I'm looking to move up from a point and shoot, and am looking to buy an entry level DSLR. I've been looking at the Nikon D60, Canon XSI and am just now learning about the Sony, Olympus and Pentax models.

Here's some background:

* I'm primarily going to be taking action/sports shots (my husband completes in cyclocross, and I'm tired of taking pictures in which he's just barely in the frame)

* I probably need some sort of image stabilization, because I don't have the steadiest of hands

* I will be shooting in a lot of damp conditions, if that makes a difference (his cycling is primarily in Portland, OR in the fall & winter -- last weekend I was shooting in a light drizzle)

* I'm going to be traveling with the camera between BUR and PDX on primarily RJs with limited overhead space

* I've never used an SLR of any kind before

* I'd like to keep my total initial purchase under $700 if I can.

With that in mind, I think I'm down to 2 choices (but I'm open to other suggestions): the Olympus E520 dual lens kit, and the Canon XSI with kit lens, plus I think with that I might buy the EF 50mm f/1.8 lens.

Some things I'm not sure about: Olympus is on the four-thirds standard - is that something to be worried about? I'm not really sure what the practical implications of that are, particularly w/ the aspect ratio. Also, I looked at the differences between the E520 and E620 and didn't see anything that would meaningfully impact what I'm looking to do, and it's a big price difference. I also can't find a local Olympus dealer that has it in stock, so I'd be buying online w/o seeing it, which makes me a little nervous. I like the smaller size of the Olympus, plus people seem to really like the kit lenses, so it sounds like a good value. On the other hand, I'm unsure about buying a less common brand. I think that (together with something I've read that suggests that the XSI is faster for action shots) has me leaning towards the XSI, but I'm not sure that's a good enough reason. Finally, I posted on a photo board (which led to a lot of recommendations of $1500+ camera bodies), but a couple of people have recommended the Pentax K-20D for its weather sealing and performance in low light.

As you can see, I'm a little overwhelmed for choice! I should note that I am slightly flexible in price, meaning if there's a lens or some feature in a camera that would be useful, I can go up to $750-800, but not up to $2,000. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

From what I've read this looks really nice. I've been a Canon guy for years now with the P&S models and have been looking to upgrade to a more semi-pro model. I can't get over the heft of a SLR, so this seems to be a nice compromise. Thoughts?
