Greetings All,

As usual tonight (for last 4 weeks now) I was unable to do an online check-in and thus add myself to the upgrade standby list for flight 199/1121 tonight. I like to check-in online so I can get on the standby list. Every time I try I always get the error that there is a problem and that I will need to check in at the airport but that they will honor the web rate for baggage check-in due to my inability to check-in online.

Well, earlier today I decided that it was getting old so I called in to inquire as to why I was having these issues, and was refereed to Web Support. I spoke to a wonderful woman there whom did some checking and after about 10 mins on hold she came back on and told me that she was trying to get them to release a first class seat to me as there was one available on the flight that was not empty (as a note my upgrade email told me there were no upgrades available on this flight) and she put me on hold for about 10 more mins, when she came back she apologized as someone had just bought that first class seat as an upgrade before she could finish the process.

This raised a few obvious questions, if one was available why was I not upgraded, or better yet, offered to purchase it myself? She was unfortunately unsure, but said that she knew the website had been having problems processing Elite Check-ins for several weeks now, but that they hoped to have a fix in place by Christmas.

Sadly, I would have happy paid the upgrade just to have a better seat to sleep in, but alas, it was not meant to be it would seem. I was curious if others were running into similar situations or not, the whole situation kinda has me wondering.

I know Air Wisconsin just runs the lines, but it was a pleasure to see such a friendly person on one of their flights as normally I feel like cattle on the CRJ's.

Just wish I could remember her name so I could send a note in about her. If I send one with the date/flight # do you think she would get some credit for her since they could track who it was?

My route options for mileage saver are

MAN - PHL - PHX - LAS which is fine by me...

but the PHL - PHX section of the flight says I will be in coach ? It's a 5 hour flight, and I was wondering why when I choose and envoy award, would it put me in coach for a section of the entire journey ?

So another question, if I have to be in coach for that trip, is it possible I will be upgraded anyway ?

Thanks

OK, I have to give kudos to US IT. I know, I know...shocking. But tonight I had to check in two travel clients, one flying US and one flying UA, both crediting to CO. Both clients already had their CO numbers in their reservations and both are Star Alliance elite, one Star Gold and one Star Silver.

united.com check-in: I am checking in the client and notice that it is prompting me to enter a FF#, although it is already supposed to be in the reservation. I select Continental and enter the number and I get a pop-up message saying to enter a valid number. I go back to the reservation and the CO number is there. I complete check-in and print the BP to a .pdf file, no CO number. I text client to try with a kiosk or agent and fax to the hotel a copy of the itinerary and BP for reference.

usairways.com check-in: I check in the client, CO number/Star Silver shows on her BP. Nary a problem.

united.bomb = F
usairways.com = A

Treasure this complimentary US IT post, because they are few and far between! :D

How does “upgrade priority–day of departure” work??

Can someone clarify for me how the upgrade process works after check-in? I’ve read what US publishes about the process. But there seems to be a lot of ambiguity. For instance, the web site says:

Once check-in for a flight has begun, priority will be based upon Preferred level and then upon earliest check-in.

Yet the auto-upgrade mail has these “Upgrade Tips”:

If you haven't been upgraded yet and your flight leaves today or tomorrow it's because the upgrade wasn't available. We'll try again upon check-in. During check-in, priority is based on the earliest check-in time. You can check in online up to 24 hrs prior to departure - this is your best chance to receive an upgrade.

While checking in, you can request to be placed on the upgrade standby list in the event that a seat becomes available. If this happens, the gate agent will clear you for an upgrade and issue you a new boarding pass.

Here’s what’s not clear to me. Say I check-in 24 hours prior to departure and put myself on the standby list. If an F seat becomes available right after that, who gets the upgrade? Is it the highest ranking Preferred member who’s already checked-in? Or does it go to the next Preferred member who checks in, even if they are lower ranked?

I know the upgrade process at the gate is a bit more straight forward.

Any insights would be helpful!

If you had occasion to be in a US Airways area of a major
airport in the last 6 months or so, you no doubt saw many
kiosks where folks were hawking a MasterCard that had a
number of airline-related benefits, most notably a 25,000
frequent-flyer mile bonus upon the first charge to the card
and payment of a $79 annual fee. Flight attendants were
even trying to sell it in the cabin. (The MasterCard is issued
by Barclay’s Bank).

So I signed up, made a charge, and paid the bill including the
annual fee. That was 2 months ago. I still have not received
the frequent-flyer mileage bonus. I have made perhaps half a
dozen phone calls, some lasting well over 15 minutes, and there
has been no resolution. Agents occasionally try to tell me that
there is no such bonus until I’ve charged $25,000. More often,
they agree that there’s a problem and promise to resolve it.
Most recently I was issued a “case number” and told it would
be resolved in 7-10 days. Today I was told “oh no, it’s 30 days”.
As far as using the miles for XMas travel, forget it.

Obviously it’s long since gotten to the point where it’s not worth
my time to deal with this, for 25,000 miles, especially with the
way miles are being devalued these days (remember when you
REALLY could get the promised free round-trip for 25K miles ?),
but this kind of thing really pisses me off, and I hold a grudge
when anyone tries to screw me over.

So I’m posting to every forum I can, to expose the sleazy behavior
of MasterCard and US Airways, to attempt to reach other victims to
possibly organize some sort of group action, and to urge everyone to
avoid doing business with either one of these companies.

First post but have lurked here a while. Thx for all the good info about upgrades.

Currently have 114 segments (all in the 3/20/09-11/17/09 timeframe). Had I been more proactive with getting a DM account this would not even be an issue as I probably missed about 40 segments (1/1-3/20) by not signing up early. Work projections have me at 120 segments next week. Then for the remaining time in 2009 I think I have an outside shot at the 150 segment mark thus being eligible for free membership in US Club. So based on my start time of 3/20/09 is there a time limit for me getting these 150 segments or does it go by calendar year? In other words, if I do not get 150 by 12/31/09 will I be reset. The language on the free membership is vague on time frames.

Hi there,

I tried to search for this answer but I couldn't manage to find it. If you have an award booked with US miles and one leg of the itinerary is cancelled/changed to lower class of service/time change which makes onward connection impossible etc. how does US go about correcting this problem.

e.g If you had NRT-BKK-LHR booked in F and the NRT-BKK sector was downgraded to 2-class. Would US allow you to change to NRT-SIN-BKK-LHR for example. Or alternatively if you're flight NRT-BKK was rescheduled so you missed your connection to LHR could you change it to a different route such as NRT-HKG-LHR.

I have only ever made one US redemption so don't really know the ins and outs of the program and I am used to BD where there are no problems if anything of this sort happens. Just wanting to know how well you are covered with US, because obviously $250 change fee is huge!

Thanks^

My gf and I are supposed to fly from PHL separately tomorrow and meet in ACA (Acapulco). But she just realized that her passport expired on 10/27/09. She is supposed to be flying CO to ACA because she had a CO credit voucher (I'm on US). From ACA, we were to fly directly to L.A. (she's on CO, I'm on US). But we were supposed to return together from LAX to PHL on US.

She booked her itinerary on Expedia. If she doesn't show up for her outbound flights on CO, will her return flight on US be canceled? I'm thinking that if she can't get a new passport tomorrow, maybe she just uses her credit for a one-way ticket to LAX and meets me there.

We're calling CO now to find out her options. But I figured I'd run it by you all, too.
