If you like, please continue this thread with your pertinent rental information for a rental carrying a "highway robbery" tax rate.

I believe this is the highest percentage tax I've paid for a non-free car rental:

3 Day weekend rental with Alamo from IAH Airport in Houston
Full-Size Car
Base Rate $30.85

Taxes, Surcharges and Fees
Cons Facility Chg 3.75/day $11.25
Iah Busing Recovery Fee $4.49
Concession Recoup Fee 11.11 % $4.83
Harris Sports Venue Tax 5 % $2.98
Veh License Cost Recov 2.70/day $8.10
Motor Veh Rental Tax (10.0%) $5.95
Subtotal $37.60

TOTAL TAX RATE: 121.9%!

Of course, the way things are going, it won't be too far into the future before some of us will have our income taxed at a similar rate. :(

Enterprise No Longer Offers Rides After Dark?

I returned a car to my local Enterprise location yesterday at 5:30 p.m. I was informed that Enterprise does not offer rides after 5:00 p.m. during "Standard Time." (Effectively, it means they don't offer rides after dark.)

Employee told me this was a new Enterprise policy, system-wide, due to "incidents" and that it was "for the safety of Enterprise employees". He could not elaborate when I asked for more info.

The employee, knowing I am a regular customer at this location, offered me a ride home despite the new policy, but implied I would not be able to count on that in the future.

Not knowing anything about the "incidents" that led to this new policy, I can only hope that no one got hurt. That said, this is clearly an "employee first, customer second" policy. During daylight hours, I often walk home (it's a 20 minute walk) but I appreciate the rides after dark since the Enterprise location is in an area that is not friendly to pedestrians.

I'm guessing that this new policy is not for the benefit of Enterprise employees so much as it's for the benefit of Enterprise's bottom line...not because it costs too much money to give rides between 5 and 6 p.m., but because their insurance carrier jacked up their rates and relented only if Enterprise agreed to stop giving rides after dark. (That's a guess on my part, obviously).

Anyhow, since I frequently pick-up and return cars btw 5 and 6 p.m. this new policy makes Enterprise a less-attractive option, at least until next spring. If I'm going to have my spouse pick me up, there's no particular incentive to choose Enterprise over Budget, Avis, etc.

Hi,
I need to deliver a bunch of boxes and some light furniture from Boston to NJ container to ship out. I am wondering if there are any rental companies that offer 10ft vans to rent with a daily flat rate. I intend to drive it to NJ and drive back to Boston, just drop off the cargo.

Most companies like UHaul and Budget off $0.99/mile which for a 420 mile RT is kind of steep.

Thanks!

My husband and are going to PHX this coming weekend for a golf trip and got a terrific rate for a convertible through Alamo's Hot Deals and applying a Costco coupon ($125 including tax). I am however nervous that a convertible will not fit our two golf travel bags and one large suitcase. What happens if we get there and cannot fit everything in the convertible? Would be able to change car classes no charge? Would we be able to change to an Intermediate SUV providing they have stock? One more question, do I have to print the Costco coupon and bring it to the counter or can I self-check in?
Thanks for any help/advice!

It was the best customer service I have ever seen/received. I would not have treated myself as well.

1) Shuttle driver was all over me to handle baggage (instead of merely sitting behind the wheel);
2) Courteous greeting by professionally dressed associate at location (gent was in suit);
3) Another associate inside greeted me and showed me where the rope line was [like, I did not know?];
4) Associate at the business end of the rope line showed me which counter rep would help me, and gave me bottled water;
5) Counter rep went through litany of options without a hard sell attitude. Counter rep also gave me 5% discount for AAA membership even though I did not have my card with me and I had made discount reservation through expedia.com;
6) all male associates were in long sleeve white shirt with tie; several wearing suit coats; and
7) when I returned the vehicle [a Mercury Gran Marquis], check-in rep stopped the bus before it left the lot and gave me my cell phone which I had left in car [duh].

Have never been treated as well as this situation. I hope that manager keeps it coming.

So, my mom and I decided to rent a car for the day and drive around Oahu. I remember it was from an Enterprise, it was in walking distance of the Hilton Hawaiian Villiage in Waikiki. When she came back with a Mustang convertible ($10 car upgrade, I didn't really care for the upgrade but whatever). When I got in the car, it was easily noticeable that the car was somewhat dirty, marks, etc. It was a black interior. It was the new era Mustang, do not know what year since the new design is from 2006, IIRC.

So my question is...do rental car companies in Hawaii get new cars every couple of years (saves $ with not shipping cars back and forth on planes every year) or was this scenario just a dirty car?

Thanks for your opinion.

Using the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards quadruple credit promo code, I rented twice from Alamo in the last 3 weeks. Within 24 hours of each return, my WN account updated with RR credit and RR credit bonus postings for these Alamo rentals.

This type of responsiveness actually reinforces my willingness to rent from Alamo in the future. Contrast Alamo's immediate FF postings with the delaying tactics of Avis/Budget, where follow-ups are almost always required for a promotional bonus.

I learned today that they reduced the Miles&More mileage you earn to 500 no matter how many rentals you did in the last 12 month.
Don't know if this should be a reason to change, but is there another rental company in FRA you would recommend?

Rented a car for 7 days from Alamo back in July at Palm Springs.
Five days into the rental the car was running roughly, so I took the car back to PSP and exchanged it for another. It was over 115 degrees all week so I didn't think much about the rough-running engine.
Rental concluded normally.
Last Friday I received a damage bill from Alamo for $7000 for a full engine replacement. Needless to say I was surprised.
I certainly did nothing to the car out of the ordinary during the rental. Car mileage was about 14K miles.
I didn't take out any Alamo insurance, but have great personal insurance so I'm not worried from that perspective.
It seems odd to receive such a large claim three months after a rental with no contact from Alamo in the interim. (I've rented from them again several times over the past three months.)
I'm in contact with Alamo claims and their position is that because I was the renter who reported the problem while I had the car, that I am liable.
Thoughts?

Next Aug. 23, we'd like to fly from Toronto to either Flagstaff, AZ, to be closer to Grand Canyon, or to Las Vegas.

From Grand Canyon, we'll go to Las Vegas, then to Long Beach (for a cruise).

We could fly into Vegas and rent car there to drive to stay a Flagstaff for 2 nights, with 1 day to see the Grand Canyon. Or we could fly into Flagstaff, and do a one-way car rental, going to Las Vegas. But the one-way car rental is very expensive. Lowest is Hertz at $125+100 drop off fee. Or Budget at $135 no drop off fee. Then add on about $40 of tax/fee.

It's a lot cheaper to rent from Las Vegas, about $25/d, or could do priceline/hotwife, for the days in Vegas.

Anyone knows of some way (codes) to get cheaper one-way car rental from Flagstaff, to Vegas?
