I have an upcoming trip thru LAX that will require an overnight stay. Prices are influx right now and there are some good deals. With that said, assuming the prices are the same or within a couple of dollars of each other, what would be the best choice? Customer service is not a priority to me because it is a one night stay.

Cocktail culture is a different breed in Los Angeles. This is a town known for "doing lunch," after all. Aspiring screenwriters and actors usually work during the day and hit clubs late at night, and slick producers hustle deals both during afternoon meetings and after hours. Happy Hour just isn't as popular here as it is in other cities you might visit.

And what makes choosing a bar even more difficult in LA is the rate of trend turnaround; one week some place is the place to be, the next you wouldn't find a Twilight cast member caught dead there.

Recently, the erstwhile travel reporter Jen Leo tweeted @HotelChatter asking us what hotels in Los Angeles would be great for a happy hour. This inspired us to revisit some of the city's most well-known hotel bars to do libation reconnaissance. Below you'll find the results of our liquored social experiment. More after the jump...
The pictures on the web site look quite stunning.

Do y'all have any suggestions on what else there is to do in or near Riverside?

(I ived in LA for two years and have explored a fair bit of the surrounding area, but I don't know much about Riverside and the Inland Empire, other than the Claremont Colleges. Also, we went to Palm Springs and Joshua Tree two years ago.)

Thanks in advance!

2 nights in LA in February. Venice or LAX?

I will be visiting LA for the first time in early Feb and have just 2 nights there. I've done lots of research and am currently swaying towards staying in Venice Beach (the other option is staying at a LAX hotel to save on transfers). I plan on doing an LA tour on my one full day as this seems to be the best way of getting a taster of all the different areas and walking/cycling along the coast on the afternoon of my arrival.

Not looking for trendy nightlife although would like to hit a couple of bars in the evening. I read here on FT in an old 2005 thread that Venice is quite dodgy at night. Is that still the case?

Any ideas or suggestions most welcome. Thanks.

Hi guys,

I am looking for a hotel room for my in-laws, who are traveling a LONG way to L.A., and it seems impossible to book a smoking room in any decent hotel. It's a stressful trip for them, so I don't want to add the headache of a smoking ban. (I hate smoke and anything having to do with cigarettes myself, but everyone has faults, and it's not my job to tell them how to live their lives).

So, I guess I'm trying to figure out a work-around. Are there hotels with balconies that they could smoke on? I found the Langham Huntington Hotel, but not sure if it's allowed to smoke on the balcony...

Does anyone have any experience with being allowed to smoke in hotels in that area recently?

Thanks in advance!!!

I'm considering between leaving my 2001/$3k-worth car in Van Nuys FlyAway or leave it to the care of remaining family members near South Pasadena who will leave it outdoor, as their newer cars already fill the garage. My flight is Thanksgiving...

I'm considering between leaving my 2001/$3k-worth car in Van Nuys FlyAway or leave it to the care of remaining family members near South Pasadena who will leave it outdoor, as their newer cars already fill the garage. My flight is Thanksgiving morning at 6 am. Trip length 10.5 days.

If I use Van Nuys, it'd be the 3:30 am bus. How likely will I find covered parking at 3 am Thanksgiving Thursday morning? If it has to be out in the sun, I'd rather not spend the $44+$14.
