Questions about the legendary cultural capitals of Europe, from the vineyards and chateaux of the Loire Valley, the lovely villages of Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon, the hill towns of Tuscany, and the spectacular scenery of the Alps – FlyerTalkers have been there, done that and live there with advice for all. If you have ever thought about climbing the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, floating down the Danube River in Austria, or run with (or away from) the bulls in Spain, then these and many other threads await you.

We (dh and I) are taking a cruise from Venice leaving July3 and returning the 17th. I'm trying to find the best options for airfare and right now things seem stuck at around $1500/pp. We would like to spend a couple of days in Venice before the cruise and are looking for our best options. We are open to flying somewhere else for a night before arriving in Venice and I've looked at fares from NYC to London, Dublin, Munich, etc. but they don't seem to work out much better. Unfortunately we don't fly often enough to have many miles (only about 37,000 each).

We would love suggestions and creative solutions on possible options to look into for getting to VCE and back. thanks in advance!

I've been to Barcelona many times, but last week's trip seemed different. Everyone I talked to had a story about bad things happening to them on the street.

One couple was driving back to BCN from a side trip to France. Getting back into the city, a moped pulled up to them when they were at a red light. They pointed to the front tire and said it was flat. They offered to help to tourists if they pulled off to the side. While helping them, they stole everything out of their car. Apparently the moped people had punctured the tire as they pulled up to the car.

Two separate stories involved a man identifying himself as a detective (with a badge in his wallet) asking to see identification. While looking at their ID he slipped all the money out of their wallets. I heard the story from a British couple in Sitges and another couple in BCN.

Is it just me or do others feel like the city has gotten a little more dangerous?

Or a central city office in Amsterdam that is open on Sunday? Or know what time the big one off of Dam Square opens on Monday morning?

I'm in the city on Sunday, and then leave around 11 on Monday AM but need to get something in the mail. Will be really tight to get in at 9am and make it out to Schipol on time.

(Or I guess a TNT/DHL/FEDEX would do too, but prefer not to use express service.)

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Folks,

Hope this is not too off topic - my wife would love to rent a lodge in the Alps for 10 days in March, she was thinking of Switzerland. We've never skiied so it doesn't have to be a ski resort ( probably for the better in terms of cost ), just a scenic location. Would anybody have any recommendations ? Even a suggested area would be great.

I'm a bit worried about the cost, as it would just be the two of us and I would be hoping for something around £100 per night - prehaps unrealistic ?

Thanks in advance for your help !

Hello to everybody this is my story : I live in Los Angeles I'm a legal resident of The Us but a citizen of CoLombia so in order to visit my friend in Italy i had to apply for a Visa C short stay tourist visa. I went for the interview two weeks ago beside the fact that the person was rude and mean i showed all the documentation they ask for plus i had to sent extra documents by fax. After a week I got a call from them sayin that my visa was denied fo two reasons: first the called the place where i was workng and they said that i don't work here anymore which is true because a couple of days after i apply for the visa another company with an higher position and better pay offered me the job so i moved . Second despite i had amoust double the money they require for the twoo week stay they said that my average from the last 12 moths(?????) was too low . For these two reasons they denied my visa . Now I don;'t kno what to do . I do Have the letter from the new job and an account that i use more than the one i used to apply for the visa . what shuold I do next? Some friend of mine suggested me to send them a letter where i explain my reasons and ask for another interview . What everybody thinks> thanks for your help .. What a disappointment it is just a vacation...

He wants to visit another city in Europe as well. We don't really know where we want to go. A cheap (less than 100 euros) short train ride would be nice, or an overnight train with costs comparable to a hotel would work as well.

Looking for any and all suggestions. Basically we want to find a place that can be a simple trip from Amsterdam, not a bunch of connections, etc. I am sure I have overlooked some gems that FTers know well. :)

I see very little action via Priceline for BCN airport hotels (BB & BFT), and the map for the airport area covers a lot of geography. I'm wondering if anyone knows whether "airport" hotels of Barcelona typically have shuttle service, or rely on some connection to Barcelona's public transport? Or for that matter, assume cab or private auto.

I've a situation that could work well there with an airport hotel (fly in, ship out the next day), but don't want something way out in the countryside where cab fare would be huge or public transport multi-step complicated.

Anyone have any experience in this area?
Thank you,
