Greetings NYC FTer's! I will be visiting the world's most exciting city several times over the next 6-7 weeks and would appreciate your input. I’ve read many of the threads here and looked over several of the links, and now it’s time to make some selections.

The dates of travel are the long Thanksgiving w/e, the following w/e (12/5-6), the Christmas w/e, and NYE w/e. For now I'm most interested in 11/26-29 and 12/5-6.

We're a couple in our late 20's/mid 30's. I'm from SF and have visited several times over the years; she's just moved to NYC from overseas but has lived there for a few months previously. Her English is very good, but it is a second language so some comedy or shows that are a bit difficult to understand are less appealing. We’re looking to hang out in the midtown/Hell’s Kitchen/Village/lower east side area.

Some likes and dislikes: not interested in long lines, getting up early, or spending all of our time running from one tourist site to another; but are interested in some culture, interesting/tasty/reasonable restaurants, exploring fun neighborhoods, and staying out late.

For Thanksgiving we're planning on the Macy's parade and having dinner at the Top of the Tower at the Beekman Tower Hotel. The food reviews aren't great but hey, it's turkey - how good/bad can it be? It will be her first TG turkey dinner, so the choices offered by a buffet are a plus in this case. At $65 pp, it seems fairly reasonable and I'm hoping that the view will make it a romantic experience. Comments?

For daytime culture, the MoMA is on the top of the list. I've been there several times and always love it. Theater is also a must, but I'm struggling with this one. I'll probably go to the discount box office and take what's available and hope for the best. Something not too serious or deep is preferred, maybe a classic. Good singing and dancing is appreciated. Hair seems like a reasonable choice. I would love to get other recommendations – interested in something that could have tix available at a discount. We’re also interested in dance, either classical or modern. I’m not sure if this qualifies as “dance”, but is Radio City something to consider?

For the evening, the thread with the list of bars with fireplaces is awesome. For the nighttime, one or two clubs would be good. She likes pop, I like alternative, so we’ll both have to compromise as long as it’s not disco/house/techno. Someplace that’s relaxed, popular, and where we can get in without waiting forever (getting there early is fine). With places changing so often, I hesitate to use reviews as even recent ones could be dated. Interesting bars where you can actually hear each other are also needed, and smaller places with live music can be a lot of fun.

Finally, restaurants. While a special meal is great now and then, I’m not looking to spend more than $200 every day on food. Small, friendly, and tasty places in the neighborhoods mentioned above are what we’re looking for, along with a couple of places that have a nicer ambience without being stiff or overpriced. Ethnic is best, spicy ethnic is even better. One requirement is a Chinese dumpling place for a late lunch or early dinner. Not an Americanized place. How is Vanessa’s Dumpling House? How about Thai or Szechuan – is Grand Sichuan any good? How about Wondee Siam? Also would like to know about your favorite secret Italian place for dinner if you’re willing to share. For pizza, would you recommend Waldy’s?

Thanks for reading this relatively long post and any comments you may have.[/size]

Im now stuck because after much research and much valuable advice on this forum we have decided not to visit time square to see in the new year. Central Park and the Brooklyn Bridge area looks quite good for firework displays to see in the new year, have any of the members here been to these places for the festivities,if so do you recommend this idea, if not can you give me any advice to where a good place to see in the new year would be. Ive looked at other threads here but as yet have had no joy.
Thanks in advance.

This place served me the best sushi I ever got, even in Japan.

I remember that the sushichef was Japanese and he had also came on 2nd place in some kind of USA champioship for sushi, 1 or 2 year before I was there.

I also have a picture of the great sushi there:

I will be in NYC over Memorial Day weekend. We have tentatively booked a room at the new Country Inn & Suites in Queens (Crescent Street between 40th and 41st, Long Island City). The hotel information says the hotel is one block from the Subway and about 2 miles from Times Square.

The per night rate for this hotel seems too good to pass up, but the question is whether this area is safe for two middle aged women (from the Bay Area in CA) who will probably go to the theater at night.

I'd be interested also in your comments about staying outside the Times Square area and whether the money saved on the room rate is offset by hassles getting into the Times Square area.

Thanks!

Hi,

I'm leaving Princeton for Thanksgiving break--visiting New York briefly, flying out of LGA and returning to EWR on Sunday night. What is the best way to get back to Princeton?

1. If I buy an off-peak round trip NJTransit ticket from Princeton to NY Penn station, would I be able to use the return trip ticket on the train ride from the Newark Airport station back to Princeton?

2. Are there any other (e.g. bus) options that would be easier?

Thanks!

^Thank you for taking the time to look at this post. I hope someone can help me. I am coming over to NYC for Chrismas and New Year for the 1st time with my partner - I really cant wait as this has been something I have wanted to do since childhood.

Anyways, we have bought the 3 day new york pass and we are trying to work out how to use it do our advantage, they have kindly included a map but when you have never been it is difficult to gage just how much time we require for each attraction, and the time it will take to travel. We are going to try and see all the things we want to in the same area if possible each day??

The list is endless of what we can see but what we want to do is as follows (sorry to go on, I know this is a lenthy thread... Thanks for patience)

Rockerfeller centre - Top of the rock

Radio City music hall stage tour

NBC Studio tour

Sky ride

Empire state

staten island

a zoo... Central park? whatever is best really (we love animals)

on location tours

circle line cruise

maddam tussauds

new york police museum

Statue of liberty and ellis island

We are in NYC for ten days but the pass needs to be used in 3 days unfort. We are open to other suggestions from anyone.... What should we not miss?

What order should these be done in? (what attractions are in same location or near)

So many questions - Sorry :( (tourists eh?)

Thanks to anyone who can take time to reply :) x:)

My partner and another British couple were thinking of going away for the Thanksgiving weekend. Perhaps a little late in planning, but would be very grateful for ideas that would either be up to 3 hours flight from NYC or a 4 hour drive.

Open to either beach, countryside or another city but preferably somewhere a little warmer than NYC. Also, we'd probably like to stay in a very comfortable hotel (e.g. FS, MO, RC or a very charming modern private hotel).

Thanks in advance for your thoughts. :)

Fellow FT'ers, I have an upcoming trip to NYC and am hoping to rely on your past experiences. I'll be in the City Dec 11th (10 PM arrival)- Dec 13th (7 PM departure) and am hoping to find a cozy fireplace to enjoy.

I'll be on a date with a resident Manhattan-ite that Saturday. The date may or may not include ice skating in Central Park and some hot chocolate. This is where the fireplace would come in handy - after the ice skating - someplace nice to sit and chat while we warm up a bit. The setting could be either a restaurant, hotel w/ a public area, or bar type setting.

Please let me know what you think. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.
New York Magazine had this article on the subject, but nothing amazing floated to the top for me as being exceptional.

But, WOW, the prices THAT WEEKEND are crazy? It isn't fashion week, it isn't the auto show. the UN isn't in session.

but, nothing seems to work for any of the places I stay. Prior weekends, no problem. Later weekend, EVEN CHRISTMAS are lower. But that weekend it is crazy.

Does anyone know what is going on?

If this thread needs to be moved, sorry about the location.
