From gorillas in Rwanda to the melting snows of Kilimanjaro and the best “sundowners” for every game drive in Africa – we’ve been there, done that and now want to talk about it. As if you have to ask – we love fine South African wines like Klein Constantia, Thelema and Vergelegen and like visiting the wine estates of Jordan Vineyards and Warwick Estates!

And this is probably pressing my luck, but does anyone know if they spit out reasonably small denominations? Last time I was in Ghana all the ATMs gave out nice, small bills, but that was 10 years ago.

What is the easiest way to do this?
We will be finishing a safari in Tanzania (ending in DAR) on afternoon of October 1st, and will need to be back in DAR for the October 7th morning BA flight to LHR, effectively leaving us with 5 full days for a Serengeti trip including getting to/from Serengeti from DAR.

Is this doable? Is it worth it for such a short time? What are the transportation options? (Price is less important than easy/quick travel).

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Dear FT friends,

I need your expertise!

I am currently in the start up process of planning my and the future mrs 11450's honney moon. Our preferred schedule is something like this (dates not fixed):

October 11th 2010: Fly Stockholm - South africa (JNB or CPT)
Safari for about 5 days in Botswana or the Krueger Park.
October 17th 2010: Fly South africa - Seychelles (SEZ)
4-5 days at North Island Lodge
around October 25th Fly home to Stockholm from Seychelles

Now, the obvious choice would be Air France from Paris to South africa and to the Seychelles with Air Seychelles from JNB since they code share with Air France and home with Air Seychelles and Air France via Paris.

However we flew to the Seychelles three years ago and we were not very happy with Air Seychelles, or Air France. Or Charles de Gaulle either for that matter!

Now, I would like to hear what you think is a good alternative to the Air France/Air Seychelles schedule.

Qatar Airways perhaps? ARN-DOH-CPT-DOH-SEZ-DOH-ARN can maybe work?

Thank you for your suggestions!

Kind regards
11450

I have a feeling that eventually one day they will get so close to Seychelles and start to kidnap the diving boats and inter-island boats, or even land on one of the resorts in the middle of the night and take all the hotel guests back to their boats as hostages.

Am I being silly and should I worry if I plan to travel to Seychelles in Aug next year?

Has anyone recently been through JNB? Can you tell me what screening they are doing for H1N1? I'm concerned that coming off an 18-hour flight, I'll have a slightly elevated body temperature even though I'm not sick. I always feel like garbage after long flights.

My other concern for an elevated body temp is that I need to get another vaccine the day before we leave that typically causes a reaction of "99.5 body temps" according to its fact sheet.

I have these fears of being denied entry into the country even if I'm perfectly healthy. Are the fears warranted? Any advice? I'm wondering if I should travel with a statement from my Dr that the elevated body temp is due to a vaccine reaction and not due to H1N1??

A few years ago (2001) I had the pleasure of going to Savuti, Botswana for a few days as part of tour. It was a marvelous location with lions, hyena, and elephants all around. I also remember the smell of wild sage as a warm breeze blew over the dry marsh. Unfortunately the channel was dry (and had been for decades), so animals tended to cluster around watering holes.

Recently, I have read some spotty reports on line that the channel is flowing again! Does anyone have any additional information on this? How far have the waters reached? What has the impact been on the wildlife viewing and behavior?

Exciting.

I'm a UK national and have agreed with my employer to a short business trip to Zimbabwe. We intend to be in Harare for approximately one week. Hopefully, our assembled experts can answer a few questions:

i) Is it possible to obtain a business visa on arrival or should we apply in advance?

ii) What can we expect in terms of the attitude and questions from immigration officers, customs and security staff on arrival (I ask this because I know the President of Zimbabwe has issues with the British government)?

iii) Are there any safety/security concerns we need to be aware of on arrival (i.e. at and around Harare airport)?

iv) I understand I will probably have to carry more cash into the country than I would normally find comfortable (I'm Mr Plastic, I'm afraid).... Can we expect the hotels (or possibly an approved guest house in our case) to take plastic?

Edit: One more question: Who flies there? I'm not seeing any direct flights from Europe though a colleague from SA told me he saw a BA 747 parked at Harare a while back....

We are traveling to SA for the first time for our honeymoon. I was just going over our itinerary for the umpteenth time and spotted what I think looks like a near-impossible connection. I'm hoping some of you JNB experts can tell me if I should immediately look into rebooking or if there is a slight possibility of actually making this connection. We are scheduled to arrive from Sabi Sabi into JNB on FedAir at 11:55. From there we have a 13:15 departure to Mauritius on Air Mauritius. Having never been to JNB I'm not sure if this is doable, assuming the stars align and we are on time. Any help/advice would be much appreciated!

For her 60th birthday "trip-of-a lifetime", my mother requested a mother/daughter african safari. After a little bit of research I've decided to go with Tanzania during July-August 2010 (avoiding the world cup traffic). My internet research has not been very helpful though and I have no idea where to go from here with planning so I'm turning to this forum for some help. I have questions and qualifications but no one to ask!:

Questions:

Should we stay in one lodge/preserve or hit few different ones to catch all the wildlife?

Should we stay in one place or is it easy enough to catch a regional flight/rent a vehicle and take off on our own (we are very capable travellers)?

All the lodges have meals included, do we have to eat all our meals at the lodges/preserves or is it easy enought to fend for ourselves (we also eat just about anything - including bush rat)?

Qualifications:

We don't need (nor can afford) luxury or even air conditioning, but showers are a must :D

She wants a "national geographic" like wildlife experience

A mix of vehicle and walking game watches is fine

We both have short attention spans so after the 300th elephant scratching on a tree trunk we've probably had enough

She's also an avid scuba diver so I'd like to surprise her with a short beach soiree at the end of the trip if possible

Help? Anyone?
