For those of you who think the only weather this past week has been on the east coast, Hawaii has been getting lots of rain, Kauai in particular. Yesterday, by 10 p.m., Hanalei had gotten over 18 inches of rain - LIhue, 8 in 24 hours. The funny thing is, unlike the 40 days and 40 nights of rain a few years ago, this time there are periods of sunshine and then it will come down in torrents. But, as one of our favorite moderators pointed out on another thread, it is definitely lush and green!

I have searched the internet without much success trying to find my dream rental house for the North Shore in December 2010. Although there are about 87 million rentals listed I can't seem to find any that allow me to search for exactly what I am looking for.

If anyone has a suggestion for a place like this: Oceanfront (sandy beach would be nice), washer & dryer, covered lanai, walking distance to convenience store (grocery would be nice), outside hot water shower - and here's the problem - smoking permitted.

And yes I have tried vrbo.com but I get error messages whenever I try to access: Invalid at the top level of the document. Error processing resource 'http://www.vrbo.com/'. Line 1, Position 1

AspNet-Version: 2.0.50727

Too much to ask, I know.

Any help in finding such a place is appreciated.

Thanks

We have never visited Molokai (have so far covered both sides of the Big Island, the Hana side of Maui and all over Oahu).

Ideally, we would like to book an east end beachfront cottage with king bed, internet access and a bit of privacy. Any suggestions??

Also, looking for info on groceries and other supplies. I see that there are a half dozen or so "markets"-- My guess is that these are very pricey with limited selection- What has your experience been?

On activities-- We love to snorkel, lay on the beach, kayak-- but are not really tour group material. Not much for shopping either. Would like to dine out a few times, any suggestions for good food?

Also-- rental car suggestions would be appreciated!
Lastly, would love to hear any other Molokai specific info anyone would like to share....

why so much Kapu?

So, related to the other thread, I was driving around the Big Island after a work-related visit, and I did a big loop to see the volcano, South Point, etc. And most of the drive was very pleasant, scenic, and enjoyable -- South Point amazing about an hour before sunset and the windmills turning.

But passing through places like the triangle southeast of Pahoa (I was on the way to see lava and back), you encounter a different feeling -- like people who went here to escape or live off the grid (in tents, shipping containers, junked out cars, shacks, or whatever), and by the signs on the road "Kapu", "no trespassing", "F@#$ off", etc. you feel they're quite hostile.

and it seemed to me, Hawaii has many (many!) pockets of places like this where things are a little bit dangerous, where you feel like normal laws don't apply, where you could get into trouble if you offended someone. Where you have to be warned not to stray too far off the path, for fear of leaving society.

Why is this? Why is Hawaii special like this? Is it because people can claim land here and they will be relatively unbothered, unlike if it were in say, New Jersey?
Who are these groups of people? Native Hawaiians? People who flew here to escape something? Are they of sound mind usually and just, different? or disturbed? What has made them hostile?

Just curious.

ps. one other interesting thing -- seeing people try to reclaim their land on the relatively-active lava flow and putting up new houses (small), surrounded by black jagged rocks as far as you can see, and for sale signs offering to sell you this land. More dedication than I would be able to muster in the face of unstoppable nature....

Hi all, just returned from a work-related trip to Big Island, where I stayed an extra night at the Hapuna Beach Prince.

It is a sprawling place, and at night, kind of empty-feeling, but even more so magnified by the lack of guests! On checking in, there was a lone guitar player serenading an empty cavernous lobby/lounge area, and later around 8pm, perhaps 4 tables of people in a space set up for a hundred.

Next morning breakfast, more people showed up, but still felt pretty bad for a hotel that has to weather a downturn like this -- maintaining everything and all the costs that that entails, in hopes of things picking back up to former glory days.

I have never stayed at a hotel this dramatically affected by lack of guests...
Anyway, just thought I'd share this observation with you.
