I went to book an AGR reward on the Northeast Regional for this weekend and got the following notice upon booking:

IMPORTANT: We are having technical difficulties printing Amtrak Guest Rewards redemption tickets from Quik-Trak kiosks for reservations made on Amtrak.com after October 24. Bring your e-mail confirmation to a station agent to print your tickets, or call 800-USA RAIL regarding your reservation.
Has anyone had any problems picking up an AGR ticket lately with a reservation made on amtrak.com after 10/24/09? I ask this since I like to cut it as close as possible and standing in the potentially big line at NYP may affect how early I need to show up.

Just wondering if others turn seats (in any car type) to suit their needs or do you feel it's inappropriate to do so without asking permission.

We have a reservation for a December Auto Train to Sanford in a roomette. The current price for a bedroom on the same train is almost $500 more than the roomette; a little steep for a single overnight. So, are there ever reduced price onboard upgrades from roomette to bedroom available on the Auto Train? If so, who do you approach on the train? Is it possible to inquire about reduced price upgrades at the station ticket office, or do you have to wait till onboard? Finally, if the upgrades are available at a reasonable price, would the amount paid be the difference between what we already paid for the roomette, and the onboard price for the bedroom? Thanks.

To all of the Amtrak experts out there:

I'm trying to use one of my Select Plus companion vouchers to travel from Stamford to Boston on the day after Thanksgiving (which is not blacked out).

The fare is $41 online, so I expected it to be $41 for two people. However, when I called to make the reservation I was told that the fare would be $54 for two people. I told the agent that I saw $41 online, and she said that she saw it, too, but that when she went to use the companion voucher the price jumped to $54. I then called back the next day and got the same response.

I used one of these vouchers earlier this year and got the exact price that was available online. Any idea what's going on here? The extra $13 isn't the end of the world, but I'm puzzled as to why I can't get the $41 price.

I transfered 10000 points from SPG to my Amtrak account (which has been dormant for at least a year or two) in early August and then redeemed 9000 of those points for award tickets.

For some reason, the remaining 1000 points expired in October - despite only being in the AGR account for less then 3 month. I was under impression that points only expire after 36 month of inactivity - not 3.

Probably a mistake, will call AGR tomorrow to find out.

I rode BOS-NYP on 2159 during the morning. Nice ride.

I arrived at NYP CA at 6:15pm to catch the 2172 at 7:00pm north, and what a mess! Two midday southbound Acelas from BOS were canceled at NHV due to the blocked tracks, with passengers put on regional equipment. The 3pm and 5pm southbound Acelas from Boston were running 90-120 minutes late.

2172 coming up from DC due to arrive at NYP at 6:50pm was turned to become 2173 southbound (8:15pm) since there was no other equipment, and they needed this set back in DC for Friday morning. Southbound from NYP 2171 passengers were put on the Vermonter #55.

Through passengers on 2172 from the south were offloaded at NYP, and they plus the originating passengers (including me!) were put on the 7:30pm Regional, 178. With the very short time available, the orders were to use the 2172 tickets on 178 and figure out the refunds later. (The ticket counter was swamped as was the Club Acela desk.) 178 finally left at 7:50pm, with nearly every seat filled. But then just east of NHV, the engine on 178 died. It turns out that during the power phase change, the on-board computer failed. It took about 40 minute to (as the Conductor said) to "reboot the computer and everything else in the engine." Of course by that time, the train air had depleted, and after the power was restored, we had to wait for the air to pump up the brake system before we could get underway. We finally arrived in Boston about an hour late (for 178), and nearly two hours later than 2172 should have arrived. On the way north through CT and RI, the two empty Acela sets I saw earlier at NHV zoomed by us deadheading to BOS to become the early Friday departures.

I called Amtrak Customer Relations today and they will send me a voucher for the difference between the Acela and Regional fares, plus the first class upgrade fee, very fair in my opinion. Kudos to Veronica at NYP's CA for handling things as best as she could, and keeping the passengers informed of their options.
