I mean really what is a muffin if not a mini-cake? If you look at the nutritional content of a Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts muffin, for instance, you'd probably be better off baking yourself a cake and having a nice big slice. They're pretty bad for you.

Yet, for some reason, my perception is that people think muffins are healthy. In line at Dunkin' Donuts this morning I heard a mom tell her son that he had to get something healthy. His choice? The blueberry muffin (not "reduced fat," mind you.. the "full fat" one).

So my question is as follows: Who is responsible for this brilliant marketing on behalf of muffins?

Tonight, a famously large-serve restaurant in a well-known hotel (aka pub) restaurant in the touristy capital of Cairns, in Far North Queensland had a new dish on the menu.

We're back to this holiday paradise, 6mths after the OzFest 2009 Do (:cool)
and I was surprised that the hotels grill kitchen is offering not only a 1/2kg steak - but also a 1kg steak!

This joint's famous for its exra-generous portions.

Cairns is a big-serve city.

Have you been dining anywhere with a few regular 'ultrasized' menu options?

From http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091027/...us_fda_oysters

NEW ORLEANS – Federal officials plan to ban sales of raw oysters harvested from the Gulf of Mexico unless the shellfish are treated to destroy potentially deadly bacteria — a requirement that opponents say could deprive diners of a delicacy cherished for generations.

The full story goes on to say that's where 2/3 of the nations oysters come from, and they are doing it because

About 15 people die each year in the United States from raw oysters infected with Vibrio vulnificus, which typically is found in warm coastal waters between April and October. Most of the deaths occur among people with weak immune systems caused by health problems like liver or kidney disease, cancer, diabetes, or AIDS.

Yes, that's right, fifteen people.

The FDA is promoting a ban because high-risk groups are not heeding warnings about raw oysters, and millions of other people may not know they are vulnerable.

I don't even really enjoy oysters, and even I know not to eat them in months without an R in them.......

Just tried Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Nutty Bits, chunks of a light nut crunch (almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds, pistachios) dipped in 60% dark chocolate and lightly sprinkled with fleur de sel--crunchy, not too sweet, and of course the dark chocolate adds to their charm. I CANNOT stop eating these things and must reluctantly ban them from the house for my own good (except for entertaining ;-). I have similar issues with really good potato chips, certain seed-sprinkled cheese aperitif crackers I buy in EU... what munchies are on your freak-out list? Or does everyone else have better self-discipline than I do?

It was interesting I heard about the Amazon deal dying from one of our wineries, who was not going to participate.

But Amazon has ended it's plans to sell wine. They are saying the shipping arrangements were driving them nuts (each state's regulations), but I have to believe they were having trouble getting wineries on board, since the winery would only get 47% of the sales price of each bottle.

And not to be passed over by the other papers, USA today now has a wine club, Six bottles every three months, $70 plus $14 shipping. Wines chosen by a panel of readers.

Starbucks Via may be -- when we look back at 2009 -- one of the Top 10 Travel Improvements of the Year.

It's miles above lousy airline coffee. Even on UA, the Starbucks is too weak, and suffers from a metallic tinge. I always get up to stretch my legs during flights, and now, thanks to Via, I also have a great excuse to get up for a good cup of coffee and chat with the FAs. On three occasions so far, my AA FAs have been more than happy to line me up with a cup, water, and real milk. Twice, it's led to extended foodie conversations, and both times the FAs broke out some cookies or other snacks for us to share. I don't know, maybe they appreciated my self-service ethos, but these little Via-related trips to the galley rank among my best convos with FAs.

It's miles beyond ANY in-room coffee I've ever had. I mean, c'mon, even those Wolfgang Puck packs are a joke.

We, the drinkers, can control the strength of the brew. I need a West Coast jolt, so I use only six ounces of water. Folgers fans and Midwesterners might want to use eight ounces. The point is, weak or fuerte, YOU, the drinker, get to choose.

It's TSA-compliant, and it's less unwieldy than trying to board the plane with a full cup o' joe. I mean, really, between balancing it on the seat cushion while you deal with the overhead bin, stuff the seat pocket with your reading material, juggle the pillow and blanket, and slide the seatbelt aside -- there are just too many opportunities to spill it. No one wants to be THAT person.

They make great stocking stuffers. Just thought I'd throw that in there, as it's never too early to bag your xmas shopping.

Anybody else dig these wondrous little packets?

(Disclaimer: I own Starbucks stock, but I'm not an employee.)
