I tried doing a search to no avail. I also checked the TSA website, but found nothing about this. Someone told me they are TSA approved, but I wanted to know for sure what their take is. I would write to the TSA, but these days it seems pretty useless to find help through them.

The filter part of the cigaarette is actually the electronic part. I have visions of having one in my purse, it goes through x-ray and all of a sudden we are in Defcon 1. If you have never seen or heard of these before take a look at the attached link.

I have been trying to quit smoking for a long time, but have not suceeded yet. This is a good step as roughly 397 out of 400 carcinogens are not entering my blood stream. It also makes it great for travel because I am free to stay in any hotel I want and I can smoke anywhere in public that I want to. There is no smoke to pollute anyone with, only a vapor. I am sure that some people will find something to complain about where these are concerned though. To me, it's as close to the real thing as possible until I can finally quit.

I am wondering if anyone has heard anything TSA wise. I am just wondering how long it will take before they will start hasseling those of us who carry it in a purse. If some inexperienced smurfy see's the battery through x-ray he/she/it may jump to conclusions and bang a nutty over it. I just don't want the big, blueberry smurfy's holding me up from any flights.

Thanks for your help.

I was going to spend time jotting down a long story, but in the end, my question is pretty simple, so I'll try not to ramble on too much.

I went to fly out of MSP this morning, and admitting I'm totally at fault, left a multi-tool in my laptop bag after hunting this weekend. (Yes, I had to work remotely and took the laptop with). Consequently, I was pulled aside for a bag check. As the agent goes to walk away with my bag, I instruct him to stay in my sight and wait until I can grab my things off the belt.

After a couple residue wipes, he begins pulling things out of my laptop bag. Now, being that I'm an IT consultant, I carry a very wide array of cables with me, along with the typical nerdy gadgets. After about 4 items, he finds the multi-tool, which I immediately confess I know they won't allow and will return it to my car.

This is where things went downhill. I was getting tight on time to make it through security a second time after running it back out to my car. The agent proceeds to pull every tiny thing out of my back and I tell him he can stop as I clearly have to leave the secure area to return the item to my car. He tells me its their policy to keep going through my bag. I object and he calls a supervisor over. I get the same story from her, and vehemently protest that if I'm not going into the sterile area that the search is pointless AND I'm going to be heading to my car and will have to go through again anyways. The debate gets heated and I'm borderline either snatching up my personal property or calling over an LEO, but not being informed enough about my rights, was caught in a difficult place.

Two more interesting notes as I leave:

1) The supervisor asks for my boarding pass to which I refuse since at that moment I'm *not* going to be entering the sterile area and ask why she needs it. She said she had to write something on it. I refuse again and she continues to demand it and I tell her she's not going to write on my phone. So then she drops it. Like if she were going to put something on it that would flag me, I wouldn't just head to a kiosk and print out another BP?

2) Once I'm "escorted" down to the baggage area, I'm "warned" by the first agent not to bring my multi-tool again since its a federal offense. I tell him to take his lies and shove it since they clearly don't fine everyone that brings more than 3.4oz of liquid or knives or butane lighters, etc.

So I'm left with the question - what rights do I have once I choose not to enter the sterile area? I know that the agents can't legally detain me, though they could try to summon a LEO. But what rights do I have in regards to my property? Has anyone else experienced this?

Luckily I made it through another checkpoint without hassle and got to my flight on time. The odd part was I was probably in my least TSA-confrontational mood ever this morning.

 I Fought the Law. . . And I Won

Steve Bierfeldt
Campaign For Liberty
Wednesday, Nov 18th, 2009

We often forget that the power wielded by government exists only because there are those willing to carry out its orders. The “Government” is not an Artificial Intelligence that exists in a science fiction movie. Rather it comprises real people who have the choice to either follow or refuse an order. In wake of the 1832 Supreme Court case, Worcester v. Georgia, presided over by Chief Justice John Marshall, President Andrew Jackson is famously rumored to have stated, “John Marshall has made his decision, now let him enforce it.” Knowing the Supreme Court had no army, police or agents to enforce their decisions, the implication was clear.

A law passed by Congress, signed by the President, and upheld by the courts will never be carried out or enforced unless there are men with badges and with guns willing to comply. It is important we remember this when we reflect on laws that are passed, directives that are issued and agencies that infringe on our civil liberties. Just one such example of such an agency is the Transportation Security Administration or TSA.

Campaign for Liberty regularly holds conferences and events to energize our members and educate those new to the ideals of liberty. From the sale of tickets, books, t-shirts, and generous donations, a weekend of excitement often finds Campaign for Liberty with money to transport back to headquarters. In my responsibilities as Director of Development I often find myself tasked with carrying this money. On one occasion, things got interesting.

As I always do when transporting money from Campaign for Liberty events, I place the funds in a thin metal cash box similar to that found at a raffle or church bazaar, with the box then placed in my carry-on bag. After working my way through the numerous levels of checkpoints, I finally came to the baggage screening. I handed my ticket and my license to the initial TSA agent and proceeded to the screening. After I had walked through the metal detector and handed my ticket to the attendant for further verification, I waited for my items to come out of the machine. The screening attendant motioned for assistance and an additional TSA attendant soon came over.

This individual ordered me off to the side and proceeded to search through my bag. As he looked through my belongings, he eventually took out the moneybox and informed me he needed to look through it. I asked him if I was being detained or if I was free to go. Upon his second demand to search it, I asked if the box was being detained. Never did he provide a direct answer to my question, and likewise never did I offer my consent to a search.

He began to grow hostile and told me he was sick of the back and forth. He ordered me into a side room next to the security checkpoint. Not wanting to inform Congressman Ron Paul and Campaign for Liberty members I had lost their generous donations, I followed him. As I was being led into this room off the concourse, I thought of situations that often begin this way and far too often do not end well for the lone individual questioning the government’s presumed authority. As the agent settled in I quickly took out my mobile phone, highlighted the proper setting, slipped the phone upright in my front jacket pocket, and began recording the conversation. The full recording can be heard here.

So this evening, i ran into the standard "NEXUS, we stopped taking that after they went out of business..." cluelessness at the checkpoint. I was mildly surprised because I hit it at SEA, where they should know better - especially when the supervisor was insistent that NEXUS cards are "not valid anymore" and that he was not willing to double-check his information at my request.

I asked for and received a comment card, conveniently prepopulated with the STSO's name, so that was helpful at least. (amusingly, he originally described the incident on the card as "Could not use nexxus card as sole form of identification", and then crossed out "sole" and wrote "only" for reasuns unknown)

My question isn't about the issue at the checkpoint - that's been rehashed to death in the NEXUS thread - but about the most effective method to complain. On the back of the card, I'm offered these options:

return the card to the checkpoint supervisor
Calling the TSA contact center at 1-866-289-9673
Sending an e-mail message to TSA-ContactCenter@dhs.gov
Mailing the card to 18880 8th Ave South, Ste 2400, Seattle, WA 98148

Which of these sounds like the best idea to you folks? I'm not usually the sort to make a big deal out of this type of thing, but when your only job is to check IDs and you don't even know what the list of valid IDs is, I think it's worth requesting management followup on the incident - but I want to choose the contact method with the maximum possibility of results.

Or are there other better methods that I'm missing - like whining on twitter @TsaBlogTeam :P

Hi All,

Where I am flying out PHX-ATL-ZRH is approximately 5 more weeks left. I am getting ready for flying out real soon. Do I need to get forms from the plane where prior to be arrived into ZRH? Can I filled the forms before I am landed into ZRH or not? Whether if I would likes to take care of it myelf where I am process go through at Passport Control & baggage claims, too. Do they have any specific questions for me? I will tell him where I visit to see my brother and I am staying in Switzerland for 1 week. Then he will stamp with my passport. What about Customs where I need to know about it? Should I will wait at the lines go to non-Euro residence, am I correct?

I am already done filled Customs forms for my returns back home and it is consider it done filling the CBP forms where I am back to ATL ongoing to PHX. I will handle on it myself where I am clearance at Immigrations & Customs. So if I have enough time where I am stay in ATL for 2 hours layover. It will be easier for me where I went through at Immigrations & Customs. I remember where I flown out TLV-ATL by years ago and I remember that I went to Immigrations & Customs in the same concourse E. I will be more responsibilities for my entire trip. Hopefully the flight will be very successful out of PHX-ZRH-PHX.

Thanks all.

Regards

The Transportation Security Administration discriminated against a Rastafarian man who worked as a baggage screener at Logan International Airport when it sent him a warning letter and a reprimand for not cutting his waist-length dreadlocks, an administrative law judge at the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has ruled.
