Suggestions for quick(&cheap) trip from Frankfurt

I will be travelling to Frankfurt in winter. I have been there before and would like to see someplace else. I will only have 3 days/2 nights.
I would like the transportation there to be inexpensive. Any type of transportation is fine. I will probably not have a car, but I might.
Hotels will likely be using points or a cheap place, so that is not an issue.
I have been to Berlin, so that is out. So is Rome, Venice, Madrid, Florence, & London. All are great palces and worth a second visit, but I want to see something different.
Any size city would be fine. Anything interesting, but nothing in particular. I like local flavor rather than touristy things.

One suggestion - rent a car and drive to the Alsace. The trip is no more that 2-3 hours from Frankfurt and in winter the hearty Alsatian food should be right on target. If you're interested, PM me and I'll send you hotel and restaurant suggestions offline.

You have a lot of possibilities! Just looking at Skyscanner gives you an indication of the places you can get to on LCC from FRA.

Personally I'd suggest Munich - easy to get to from Frankfurt by car, coach or train, but a world apart from the other places you say you have visited in Germany - it is Baveria after all!

Or maybe take the train to Brussels, Amsterdam or Prague - all good destinations for a short break.

How about a flight to Porto, Portugal, on Air Berlin for 69 euros? or Bilbao for 70 euros (taxes and surcharges included). See http://www.whichbudget.com/en/cheapflights.php?from=FRA for all the budget connections.

Munich is indeed worth a vistit and esay to get there.

What about Paris? Can be nice in the wintertime as well. Great for shopping and sight seeing. You can get there by car (4-5 hours from FRA).

My suggestion would be one night in Köln and one in Aachen. Or both nights in one of the cities with a side-trip to the other.
Both are easily reached from Frankfurt (by train or by car) and have quite a bit of sightseeing to offer and lots of nice pubs.

Koln is a great idea. Quick train trip as it is true high speed for a large chunk of the trip, nice scenery, lots of hotels very close to train station. Even better, there are many intersting things to do within walking distance.

If you decide on Munich, then stop in Nürnberg on the way. It's wonderful "old-world" but not overwhelmingly big. If you're there late in the year (you didn't say exactly when), then the Christmas Market lends a wonderful atmosphere to the season.
