Trieste, Italy in Feb

So Jet'Dillo has been invited to speak at a conference in Trieste. I'm likely to be on my own to amuse myself for a few days. I've looked at a few tourist web pages and all I see for winter is ski resorts (I don't ski) and maybe a museum or two.

Any suggetions? Recommended English resources? I can muddle through Italian if I must with a good dictionary at hand, but I'm by no means good at it. (Between nonna and opera I've picked up a bit, but I still failed basic Italian in school.)

I guess in the meantime I'll just have to hang out in little North Beach cafes working on my language skills!

Trieste isn't incredibly interesting as Italian cities go. Udine is within range of a day trip and worth such, also Cividale near there is a unspoilt gem.

Around Trieste are some caves. A better plan is to head into Slovenia, where there is a world famous cave at Postojna. These caves are only an hour or so from Trieste but I am not sure about transport links. Slovenia generally is very pleasant to visit, but there are infrequent trains from Trieste, making daytrips a little difficult. Perhaps there are buses. Buon viaggio

I believe that is a good idea .. the boats depart direct from Venice train station to all nice venues.

I have never been in Trieste. Somebody recommended Udine .. I did not like it, it's rather boring.
