Anyway.. my 2 cents.
English is no problem in the Flemish part of Belgium. It used to be more a problem in the French speaking part but that gap is slowly closing.
Brussels itself is a very nice city... for kids might I suggest the army museum. Used to be free.. now a small fee.. but the planes will make an impression to all.

Also the natural history museum with the dino's is always a hit.

There is also a rather new train museum:

Bruges I would do in a day trip from Brussels. (one hour by train, small walk through a park to the center (also busses). I live there and I really don't know how people can spend more then two days there. The chocolate museum might be interesting for your party (http://www.choco-story.be/ENG/). It's better then the one in BXL (which is the hip way of saying Brusssels)
You are allowed in bars with kids (in contrast to UK) so you could sample some Belgian beers (if you like that) at:
De Garre (http://www.degarre.be/)
Or personal favourite Brugse Beertje (http://www.brugsbeertje.be/index_en.htm)
(oh and in contrast to what another poster said.. there is no direct Bruges-Paris train)
Another destination you might have to look into besides already mentioned Antwerp is Ghent. 30 min away from Brussels. Also have a few museums which are interesting with kids like Huis van Alijn. (a step back in time) : https://visit.gent.be/en/home
Regarding further destinations, there are high speed train connections from Brussels to Paris, Amsterdam and Cologne (https://www.thalys.com/be/en/), London (http://www.eurostar.com/). Various other cities are reachable too: https://www.b-europe.com/Travel/Destinations
What you also could consider is a city like Berlin. There are generally cheap flights out of BRU to the german capital. (it's my favourite EU capital.. don't know exactly why.. the vibe I guess)
