Qatar Airways used to sell the BUD-ZAG leg of its flight, sad to see it's been discontinued.

So, I had to get Croatian visa because czech wouldn't issue multiple entry schengen visa unless I had Croatian visa. But, to get Croatian visa I had to have travel docs. D'oh!

Hungarian Railways site is still down or at least wouldn't let me purchase the tickets. One of the consulate officer suggested this bus service. http://www.volanbusz.hu/en

$14 for a bus ride from Budapest to Zagreb and timings are better than the train. Or they claim to atleast. 7AM departure and Noon arrival.

Visa? Do you hold a US passport? If so, you won't need a visa to visit Zagreb:

Returning to the subject at hand, I am trying to decide if its worthwhile doing a day trip to Zagreb from Budapest? The train situation sounds awful? Might try Bucharest instead.

If you're looking for a really cool place to day trip to, you might consider going to Miskolc (two hours from Budapest by train), and visiting the thermal cave baths. You will not be disappointed.

I am PR with a foreign passport. I had to get Schengen and Croatian visa (for reasons I cant fathom czech consulate able to issue multiple entry visa w/o crotian visa)

Anyway, back to your question, I couldn't get myself excited to spend time in Zagreb. So I am transiting in ZAG and moving on to lake plitvice.
