Riga and Tallinn
Hello FTers,
I am planning to visit Riga and Tallinn in late July. Would you have any must-do's for me? Any tips re quirky architecture, live music, dance performances or local food are also much appreciated.
Many thanks in advance and have a great weekend!

The most fun I had in Riga was at Regro's, a shooting range in an old Soviet fallout shelter. Got to fire an AK-47 and a Glock 9mm. The top pick in the LP guidebook too!

The online In Your Pocket series is an excellent resource.

For "quirky architecture," it's hard to beat Riga's many art nouveau buildings, some of which are quite bizarre. All of the guidebooks I read said to visit the "quiet center" around Elizabetes Iela and Alberta Iela for art nouveau, but I was unprepared for quite how many fantastic exteriors were to be seen throughout the old city. Even beyond the ones singled out by websites like this one, just keep your eyes open and look up above street-level.

hey there
we went to Baltics mainly for beer tasting but when it comes to quirky architecture I'd definitely recommend:
Riga:
- riverside & renovated ares behind the central station
- interesting road systems (roundabouts connecting two riverbanks!)
Tallinn
- Depeche Mode Baar
- Ferry Terminal - soviet style concrete-built brutalism
enjoy your trip!

In Tallin, go for a walk on the old city walls.
Also for Tallin, when I was there a few years ago, there was an amazing wine bar on the top floor of a large of factory building with a bowling alley on lower floors. Never would have found it without directions from the hotel. Huge range of wines by the glass, sensibly priced, staff knew there stuff, and a large range of wines that you wouldn't get at a "western" wine bar (Georgian etc). If it's stil there, and if you can find it, try it!
