1st visit to Vienna

I am going to be in Vienna from Sept 10 afternoon until Monday morning - I am deciding whether I should make the trip to Salzburg. I've never been to Vienna.
Also - I wanted to take a tour that Friday night to see the city but the only tour I can find only does Sunday and Monday.

Anyone have suggestions?

Thanks!

I am not sure how much time you have, it appears to be a week, Sept 10-17. Which is plenty of time to see a bit of both Vienna and Salzburg. It is not quite a 4 hour train ride between the two cities. Another idea is to visit Bratislava which is an hour away to the east in Slovakia. It has a great old city center as well some interesting castles.

Edit to add that this year is the 150th birthday of Klimt as such there are many special exhibits in Vienna that should be seen. I was able to visit several during a visit in June.

There is so much to do in Vienna that I could easily fill several books. There are hundreds of wonderful cafés and restaurants to try as well.

In addition, before contemplating a trip to Salzburg, you might want to take in the towns and villages close to Vienna in Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), esp. my favorite region, the Wachau, and the town of Dürnstein (where Richard the Lionhearted was held captive during the Crusades).

But I digress.

Perhaps my article Vienna: Summer and Winter might be helpful for you to review to get an idea of what you might want to do and see.

yes, would be really nice if you gave us the time bookends in the same format

vienna deserves 3-5 days. you shouldnt really need to book a tour, as the imperial/baroque vienna is all centrally locally within the "ring" (on which you can hop a tram).

outside the ring there is the danube and dining/drinking/relaxing/partying activities. and up north along the danube is the wine country.

salzburg, imo is only for 1 full day. if you head that direction, might as well go all the way to innsbruck?

There is no Public Tram (or "Bim" we say) going around the "Ring". You have change the Bim after some Stops.
There is only a very expensive Guided Bim.

Since you just want transportation, is there a reason you aren't just taking a taxi? A taxi from the 1. Bezirk to wineries in Vienna is quite reasonable.

Have you seen this page?
http://www.wien.info/en/shopping-win...e/wine-cellars

I didn't know you could do a cellar tour at Palais Coburg. Must do that next time.

If you get the Vienna Card, you can use the u-Bahn as much as you want (about 21 Euros for the Card), plus you get a discount booklet, which you can download here to see what's included:

http://www.wien.info/en/travel-info/vienna-card

You may want to get a taxi if you're going to Grinzing and visiting several Heurigen in the evening, since you might not be fit to drive when the evening is done. It may be expensive, but you could possibly make a deal with the driver before you leave and ask how much for round trip and would he come back at a certain time to pick you up. We've done that before and save maybe 10 Euros.

I bought a Vienna card - it worked out as better value than a transport pass when I took into account the attraction discounts/free entry. I do agree that anyone visiting Vienna should buy some sort of transport pass though - Vienna has excellent public transport which is easy to use and can be fun to ride around on.
