Upgrade help

Is there a way to book a paid ticket and then upgrade with miles in a single transaction?

I can only see an option online to upgrade an existing booking and I don't want to book and then find the upgrade is no longer available.

If not online can it be done if I call?

Thanks.

I always do by calling and connecting to the First and Business Class new bookings. The process takes usually about 15 minutes as they first book the regular ticket etc and send you the e ticket and then continue to change to the upgrade. I've done this way many times and never a problem.

It can all be done online easily. The first thing to do is check availability of an upgrade. Then book the flight & when you get the ticket upgrade. I find it easier than phoning the call centre.

Do you check availability of an upgrade by doing a dummy miles booking in the upgraded cabin? My conern was if those seats got sold between doing the original flight booking and getting the ticket and booking the upgrade.

I check availability using:

http://www.etihad.com/en/plan-and-bo...ption-flights/

I then book the flight and upgrade straight after. its all quick. The chance of someone taking the seat before you get the upgrade is always there, but its extremely small.

Can you elaborate a bit on this process ?

I should check the availability of redemption flights ( guest seats or open ? ) in business , and if any seats are available for purchase with miles, I can then buy a saver or flexi economy ticket and then upgrade online. This is what you meant ?

1 - http://www.etihad.com/en/plan-and-bo...ption-flights/

2 - Choose the Departure, Destination, Dates. Choose the class of travel you wish to upgrade to

3- In the search results you are looking for "Guest Seat" availability

4- Before booking the flight. Use millage calculator to check the number of miles required for a particular booking class: http://www.etihadguest.com/en/earn-m...ge-calculator/

4a - Book your flight at http://www.etihad.com/en-gb/ ensuring the booking class can be upgrades as per the mileage calcultor

5 - Wait for the ticket to be emailed. Normally within 10 minutes

6 - Then goto manage my booking and upgrade: http://www.etihad.com/en/before-you-...ge-my-booking/

Thank you very much.

I indeed did the same a week before when I want to upgrade for my sister and her infant child from Economy to Business. As I was not sure of how much miles needed for my infant, I called the EY agent. I had a flexible date schedule, but the agent said upgrade option was available only for 2 days in the entire week, whereas I found ''Guestseat'' available for every day of the week for the same flight on Business. Eventually I chose the date the agent offered, but my preference was someother day. That is why I asked the question now, just to make sure if I did something wrong. I did exactly the same as you briefed

I missed out something ?
