Air Serbia (JU) starting flights to NYC

In a press conference held in Belgrade earlier today, Air Serbia announced they're starting five-weekly services from BEG to NYC as of 1st June 2016.

It hasn't been specified which airport they will be operating to, nor has a codeshare partner been designated for onward connections, but I personally expect it to be JFK and AA, due to the whole Etihad alliance thing.

It's a bold and somewhat unexpected move, since their current regional network has a few glaring omissions in Eastern Europe, but then again, the cost base is significantly lower vs. major European carriers, and the market is easily large enough to fill five planes a week. I hope that more details will be revealed soon.

I just saw Carfield's trip report of the inaugural flight from JFK. Unsurprisingly, they're flying the wrong plane (the A330 -- way too big for this market) at the wrong time (weird departure times) with uncompetitive fares. Sounds about right. I guess it's nice for Serbia that Etihad has money to burn.

Their C definitely needs repricing (as well as a few additional touches), but Y fares are quite competitive, especially from airports such as KBP and BEY. Considering the regional catchment area and the fact that JFK alone sees some 24.000 O&D pax from Serbia every year, I think the A332 is a good fit. Departure times could indeed be better, but I presume there were slot constraints at play.
