No. EY changed the rules a while ago and airport staff aren't permitted to sell upgrades to passengers on award tickets even if F and J are wide open. I tried this IAD - AUH (I think J to F rate was $900 USD) but they didn't let me because I was on an award ticket. However, upon boarding a middle eastern family stole my J seat and I told the cabin crew that I wasn't moving anywhere else and that they had to get the family to their ticketed seats. In the end, they upgraded me to F for free, I was quite surprised.

I have tried this once before and they refused saying it was not their ticket. Most airlines will do this if its not issued on their stock.

AUH to SFO Bid Y to J
I just received the Select Upgrade email to bid for an upgrade from Y to J on a AUH to SFO route. The min/max bids are $1450/$2000.
Does anyone know if the min bid seems high for this route? And do you think I'll be able to get a lower price by calling into Etihad or asking for an upgrade at check-in?
Thanks in advance!

Bid Upgrade on Deal Fare!!
Flying from AUH-MAN next week on T Class Deal fare, which is a non upgradable fare... normally. However, just got and email informing me I could. Range is £365 to £940.
Normally our Deal fares are not eligible for upgrades. However, as a special offer you can now bid for an upgrade by supplementing your original fare as part of your offer amount. Click here for more information.

Not interested in paying personally, as much as I might like to be in J . Hopefully if anything is overbooked, being VA Gold will help.
