BMW replacing Volvos at DXB effective today (March 9)

Walked out to see 8 blue BMW 520 Estate cars, without the Business class badging.

50 cars started this morning in DXB, doing arrivals only as on board computers not yet installed.

All Volvos to be replaced as they hit KM limits.

My car had 143km so far ad I was the third trip.

Though I was quite fond of the V70's, on recent trips to DXB, I had noticed some of them sounding weird when they'd come to pick me up, and on the last trip, both on arrival and departure, the car had a check engine light on the dash. One of them even had in excess of 280k miles on it.

If they're bringing in 520's for Business Class, how is it any different from the E200's they use for FC?
Might as well just mix and match, and use whatever's available rather than having different cars for a different cabin.

Oh, this also calls for an update in the Chauffeur Drive thread.

Are the new cars larger or just better interior space? Just curious.

Finally. It's strange that the business class cars are old banger Volvos whilst a standard taxi is a nice new Toyota

With a new 5 series just out, I'm sure EK were offered a great bulk deal on the previous shape model.

If not mistaken, this service is rendered to a rental company (was it Avis ?).

And indeed, if JCL has BM5, FCL has BM7, then I/O should get at least Maybach ...

Yes, I remember seeing AVIS stickers on the tailgate of the Volvos. Some of the keys even had avis key chains on them.

So they're the pre-facelift 5 series then?

Some of them are still pretty old. Last trip to DXB (Jan 2017), most of the taxis were old Camry models with faded headlights and squeaking brakes. Most with over 400k on the odo.

I still only saw very few new taxis, those too may look new, but actually have very high mileage as well.

That would be normal considering that they are constantly driving around. Over two years, that's about 12.5k miles/per month (if we take 11 months on the road + 1 month in the shop, being cleaned/repaired for a year). That's about 420 miles/per day, i.e. an average speed of 18 mph. Taxis and fleet cars rack up the miles incredibly fast.

errrr, this was about CD at DXB.

Otherwise, you are right, at outstations you can get a much better car. How many times did I get S-class, which were reserved to I/O at DXB ...
Sometimes I got A8, and, recently, two times in a row Tesla (back seats are not really comfy ...).
