Didn't QR announce they were looking into ATH-US flights about a year ago or so? It seems that ATH airport has been looking at year-round options for some time and that EK has stepped in. Should be a relatively low-risk expansion for them, too.

Q: Do we know whether ATH will now be 3x daily? Or is this new flight replacing EK 105?

Not true!

Frach said there are no immediate plans for Greece-U.S. flights, while adding that Emirates will “work closely” with the Greek authorities to assess possible opportunities.

Only New York and Philadelphia are currently served direct from Athens, by Delta Air Lines Inc. and American Airlines Group Inc. respectively, with other locations requiring a stop in West European hubs. That’s “definitely not popular with the Greek diaspora in the U.S., or those U.S. clients wanting to join cruise ships in Piraeus,” Clark said.

The same goes for Budapest, and Zagreb airports asking EK to start trans Atlantic services. We can even expect Zurich to join the club soon with Mexico City from what we have heard lately. Even Madrid, and Barcelona have been mentioned several times as potential trans Atlantic via points.

All EK are doing is filling in the vacuum.

Smart moves.

ATH-NYC appears to be served on a nonstop basis only seasonally (DL to JFK and UA to EWR in the summers).

Meanwhile, MXP-JFK only had business class service until EK rolled in (and you know those designers wanted F).

Is JAL considered the best way to redeem on emirates at the moment? Redeeming for this flight (EWR to ATH) with emirates miles seems pretty expensive.

I wonder if they will launch any sort of biz class fare sales for 2 as they often do on the JFK to Milan route.

Smart move. But over 2 hour transit time in ATH? Huh...

Emirates flight EK209 will depart Dubai at 10:50 local time, arriving in Athens at 14:25 before departing again at 16:40 and arriving into Newark at 22:00 on the same day. The return flight EK210 will depart Newark at 23:45 local time, arriving in Athens the next day at 15:05. EK210 will depart once again from Athens at 17:10 bound for Dubai where it will arrive at 23:50,

I believe EK are targeting pax for the leg DXB-ATH-DXB and for the leg ATH-EWR-ATH.

If a pax wants to fly DXB-NYC-DXB, there are 3 daily non-stop flights.

Why would EK go to EWR rather than JFK when they already have a base set up there? It is it a slot issue? Seems tough to now set up an infrastructure at a new airport just a few miles away from another? Does anybody know what lounge they will use?

I don't know for sure, but I will guess:
(1) Slots at JFK at the times EK wanted were unavailable / too expensive
(2) They wanted to avoid crowding at the JFK lounge and other facilities in the evenings
(3) Newark (and/or the state of New Jersey) provided incentives to Emirates, and JFK didn't offer any.

I am sure they would like to, but I guess Delta might object.

Because it's a sign of a mature airline to operate out of more than one metropolitan area airport

Third NBO flight cancelled even before start??

"The Kenyan government has moved to bar Emirates (EK, Dubai Int'l) from increasing the frequency of its Dubai Int'l-Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta flights Kenya's Star newspaper has reported.

The Dubai-based carrier announced on January 19 that effective June 1, it would introduce a third daily flight between Dubai and the Kenyan capital - EK 717/718 - using B777-300(ER) equipment. The added flight would increase the total number of scheduled Emirates flights between the two cities to twenty-one per week.

However, quoting a letter from Transport Principal Secretary Irungu Nyakera to Emirates' Nairobi executive secretary, Carolyne Kyule, dated January 20, 2017, the report says the suspension of the flight's rights came after informal talks between the Kenyan and UAE civil aviation regulators.

Kenya is said to be seeking a review of the terms of its Bilateral Air Service Agreement with the United Arabs Emirates, "in order to ensure parity in the exercise of rights granted".

"In this regard, the republic of Kenya is unable to grant a third daily passenger frequency to Emirates Airline before the review," it said. "Our earlier approval for flight EK 717/718 is subsequently withdrawn."

As of January 26, EK717 is still available on the Emirates website suggesting further consultations between the sides are ongoing.

According to the ch-aviation capacity module, the Nairobi-Dubai market is currently controlled by Emirates with 5,040 weekly seats (49.89%), almost double that of Kenya Airways (KQ, Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta) which has just 2,653. The addition of the third daily flight in June will further skew the market in Emirates' favour driving its weekly seating total to 6,480 or 62.33% of the total market. "
