As an aside to the matter of timing, I would add - based on my (wide) experience of Emirates and (limited) experience of Qatar - that the actual quality of food on Qatar is noticeably superior.

Many thanks for clarification. Think we have been spoilt by Qatar "airside service". We were thinking of going to BKK with a break in Hong Kong but looking at the the food menus, service and seat width on Emirates from Manchester, we may have to revert to going direct to Bangkok with Qatar. Unfortunately no Cathay from Manchester any more.

IMO the EK crew rushes through the meal service with zero regard for passengers
most passengers were likely in the lounge for a bit and ate if they were hungry, no need to serve in-flight food only one hour into the flight
also some flights of some length only have a breakfast service?
I agree food service on Qatar is superior and the on-demand option is great

That's true for me, but lots of people take pride in turning up at the airport at the last minute. They probably appreciate the early on-board service.

It depends on the passenger profile of the flight, I think - a flight might be "daytime" ex-DXB, but if your records show that 90% of the pax have arrived on short connections a few hours after a food service, then clearly it would be better to have an earlier starting service on board.
EK J is functionally a commodity product - whilst dine-on-demand would be great, I think it would be pretty infeasible given their cabin densities.

I think they may be trying a new way to thin the ranks of Elites.......death by food poisoning . I had a lamb shank the other night that I would bet my last dollar (or Durham) came from a 120 year old goat and was cooked for about 12 hours. I needed 3 cognacs in a row to wash the taste from 1 bight out of my mouth

Whatever you do, steer away from the chicken schnitzel sandwich. Most inedible piece of cardboard door stop I've ever been served (on air or the ground).
I'm amazed it remains on the menu each time I'm back with them.
