Thanks all for your prior assistance. As it transpires, we managed to get a points upgrade to J for both legs (SYD --> DXB, DXB --> FCO).
I write this from the on-board A380 wi-fi.
All very good service and experience thus far! And while the seats are looking a bit dated, it's good to see they've made some upgrades since last time (ICE is more responsive, for example, new 'tablet' remote, and a few other small things.

I need 1500 miles by Feb 2016 to renew my gold, my flight on Feb 24th doesn't quite get me over that line however my return flight on 7th March would easily give me the 1500 and then some.
Is there a grace period or if I don't have those additional 1500 by 29th Feb 2016, thats it?

However, because of the way EK calculates on a rolling monthly basis, you might be in luck - your previously earned tier miles don't all expire at the end of Feb, each earning month expires 13 months later (i.e. miles earned 1st of Feb 2015 don't count for status on the 28th Feb 2016, which is where the 12-13 month thing comes from).
If you didn't earn anything in March 2015 then it's possible on 7th March 2016 the system will look back to the start of March 2015 and count from there and it will bump you back up to Gold. Also, status lasts for 2 months after the review date, so you'll still be gold in March anyway - in effect, you get an extra 2 months to try and keep your status. Wow, how did you manage that! The system should automatically upgrade you to Gold - write to Skywards or speak to someone at the EK call center and they should be able to arrange it.

Due to the zone based calculations, I did not think it was possible to earn an odd number of miles such as 6,573 for a flight. DXB to JNB or to CPT gets the same number of miles - this is something that irritates as EK do not give me extra miles on the CPT flight even though I have to endure flying further!

There was an issue earlier in the year where the F flex and F flex plus mileage earning wasn't completely aligned, e.g. 14997 miles for F flex and 15000 miles for F flex plus. I think it's fixed now, so send an email to Skywards asking for Gold status.
