Wow! Emirates cancels the entire A350XWB orders
Unbelievable! Emirates & Airbus has agrees to cancels the entire A350 orders. Instead, EK wants to order A380neo. They wants to boosts more 773ER aircraft and also, they want to increase the entire 777-X order, as well.

It makes a lot of financial and logistical sense from a maintenance and crewing perspective to limit the number of aircraft types a carrier has. You only need to look at the recently merged US carriers to see an unholy mix of types which must be a nightmare to maintain and keep stocks for.
It's still a surprise bearing in mind the global economic recovery that is showing signs of being underway.

What kind of penalties are associated with cancelling an order like this?
It seems this may actually be good news for Airbus given the backlog as they can now get paid to do nothing. Some sales guys will have to work extra hard to get long term outlooks back, though.

I'm not surprised about the cancellation. The 77w are a very reliable aircraft and it appears those along with the a380's (not so reliable) are the future.
It must be easier to service/deal with fewer aircraft type.

It'll be lower cost for EK overall if they only have to train/service/maintain two types of aircraft, would make sense for them.
747-8, while probably not helping, would be cool, simply because 747 family is just so much more elegant than that whale of a thing A380.
