Specific 12 months for requalify vs. rolling 13 months for qualify?

Hello.

I understand requalifying for status is based on a specific 12 month period, whereas qualifying for new status is based on a rolling 13 month period. I'm trying to wrap my head around how this would apply to my mother's Skywards account, and would appreciate if my fellow FTers could ensure my understanding is correct.

Current tier: Silver
Review date: end May 2014

Tier miles:
- May 2013: 6,238
- June 2013 to April 2014: 21,300
- May 2014: 1,500

If she was a Blue member, they would have looked at her rolling 13 month period in late May 2014 and counted 29,038 tier miles, and given her Silver through end of May 2015.

However, because she's requalifying, they look at the previous 12 month period at the end of May 2014, and count 22,800 tier miles. So she would be short 2,200 tier miles.

On 1st June 2014, she would lose her Silver status. Is this correct, even though she has sufficient miles to newly qualify based on the rolling 13 month period?

(I understand her Silver card + benefits would actually apply till end of July 2014).

If she flew 2,200 tier miles in June 2014, she would newly qualify for Silver, since the rolling 13 month period would have a total of 25,000 tier miles. Is this correct?

Not really, if your mother was a blue then the system will look back 13 months at every mileage accrual event. So it this case, your mom would hit silver somewhere in April. when she accrued the miles required for crossing 25 K (6,238 + 21,300 = 26,538 > 25K required for silver qualification). So her requalification period for silver would be until April 2015

Correct.

Yes, she will lose the status. However, your assessment of her 13 month rolling period is incorrect. It is not 1-May-13 to 31-May-14, but 1-Jun-13 to 30-Jun-14. Since she has only 21,300 + 1,500 = 22,800 in this period, she will not qualify for silver yet even using the 13 month rolling period.

Correct.

Yes, and she would then qualify for silver.

Thanks. So she can either get the extra 2,200 Tier miles in May and requalify, or in June and newly qualify.

That's what I had told her, just wanted the FT collective wisdom to confirm.

Even though it might technically be newly qualifying in June, there's no practical difference as the system will still read her status as Silver if taking any flights between May and June and a new card will be dispatched as normal then (either Blue or Silver depending on the miles!)
