Fuel surcharges now on reward seats ex-Australia?
Is this a natural consequence of the QF partnership or has this been the case for some time?
I was looking at some redemptions for a relative MEL-SIN-MEL, and first disappointment was that the 5% discount is gone, so she will need to accrue a few extra Skywards miles to get a business class return. Not a huge deal. But more disappointing that there seems to be surcharges charged on awards ex-MEL (but not ex-SIN)
The "taxes" component of award booking MEL-SIN-MEL were $447.48 AUD in business and $174.28 AUD in economy.
This is obviously not govt/airport charges you would expect it to be almost identical on the reverse journey but both business and economy awards SIN-MEL-SIN have surcharge of $146.30 SGD (~$115AUD).
I know EK introduced fuel surcharges some time ago, but didn't know they hit certain award bookings. How long has this been the case?

Doing a check on ita for a paid ticket, EK does seem to have a YQ of $60.80 in economy and $334 in business class to Singapore with taxes of $113.87 which is consistent with what it is now charging for awards
Does seem that EK has definitely deteriorated and now has its nose in the surcharge scam trough

At least ex-Australia. Either they, like everyone else, see the Australian market as one that aren't that fussed about such surcharges (i.e. milk it for what they can get), or their new friends in Mascot don't want to have surcharge free EK redemptions up against heavily surcharged QF redemptions.

So will this apply on upgrade awards from Y-J if they are charging a higher fuel surcharge on J tickets?

I don't see that it will. When upgrading from economy to business on trans tasman there is no additional fuel fine to pay and EK does have different fines for economy n business there too
