Apparently not, as both on my outbound, and my inbound from BKK, the agents said I'd have to contact QF to upgrade (which I imagine would have been the full fare difference, or indeed, a new o/w J ticket). I thought they might have some flat fee upgrade offers like on BA, irrespective of the ticket issuer or original fare.

Completing for my husband
Upgrade given: Y - J
Upgrade location: Check-in desk
Route: AKL to BNE on the A380
Flight number: ?
Type of ticket: Not sure but a last minute booking on morning of flight
Date of travel: 30/11/14
Tier status: Gold
Tier miles to date: approx. 58000
Skywards miles balance: about the same I think.
Number of pax on the same PNR: Single
Skywards DOJ (approx): 2009ish
first letter of your surname! G
I understand the flight was pretty full, as he had tried to book flight day before, no seats in Y and then managed to snag one on the day. He was a very happy camper as had asked if a window seat was available as he had only managed to select a middle seat and wasn't until he got to the lounge that he realised he had been upgraded.

Seat allocation disappeared about two hours before departure. I suspect this route has very few customers carrying status as I was only just recently status matched to silver
