It speaks loudly about the failure of Qantas act competitively on overseas routes that Singapore Airlines has today moved to reassert its lead over Emirates as Australia’s largest foreign flag carrier in confirming its plans for a large expansion of its flights between Adelaide and its Changi Airport hub for connections to the rest of the world.

In a statement, which trails its own leaks to the media by several days, it tabulates its Australian operations as follows.

Singapore Airlines is Australia’s largest foreign carrier and will operate 105 weekly services, as of 2 July, from the following cities:

Adelaide – ten flights weekly operated with Airbus A330 aircraft
Brisbane – three flights daily with Airbus A330 aircraft
Melbourne – three flights daily with Airbus A380/Boeing 777-300ER/Boeing 777-300 aircraft
Perth – three flights daily with Airbus A330/Boeing 777-200/Boeing 777-300 aircraft
Sydney – four flights daily with Airbus A380/Airbus A330/Boeing 777-300 aircraft
Darwin – four flights weekly with Airbus A319/Airbus A320 aircraft, operated by SilkAir, the regional wing of Singapore Airlines

In 2012, Singapore Airlines celebrates 45 years of service to Australia and the fifth anniversary of the first A380 flight, as well as further capacity increases by growing from 95 weekly services to 112 by the end of the year.
.
This is not about Qantas. It is about Singapore Airport versus Dubai Airport, following the public musing by Emirates about nothing more than the possibility it might put a daily 777 into Adelaide operations.

It remains to be seen whether Singapore Airlines succeeds in intimidating Emirates into staying out of Adelaide. I wouldn’t bet on this proving to be the case.

So when does EK begin flights to ADL??
Let the battle for the Australian skies begin!

Seriously, do all those routes have that much capacity which would result in Singapore Airlines adding additional services? If so, wouldn't Emirates have caught onto it before or at the same time as Singapore Airlines?

Interesting...

EK075/076 DXB CDG DXB upgauges from B77W to A380 on 01JAN13 so EK will operate twice daily A388 + 5 weekly B77W into CDG.

Yep, sure it is. Here the real official PR:

I'm glad to see EK is doing very well. Give it chance to get some more competition.

The new Barcelona flights are starting tomorrow and the schedule

EK185 DXB BCN 0655 1200
EK186 BCN DXB 1640 0100+1

seems indicative of plans to tag another destination to this rotation. It is not standard EK practice to have the aircraft on the ground in its European stations for well over 4 hours. Destinations such as MEX, PTY, CCS and BOG could all be tagged to BCN within the existing schedule.

Is this as a result of not having access to other secondary French airports, besides Nice?

I think, EK is running out of DXB slots in the main peaks, the new LIS rotation has strange timings for the return, too, albeit being nearly the same distance as DXB-DUB, for example.

If they ever want to serve MEX, they need a stop somewhere in europe, because a stop in the USA wouldn't be possible because of the transit visa requirements and a stop in Canada wouldn't be possible because of the traffic rights.

DXB-CCS could be nonstop, maybe with a tag to BOG? It's shorter than DXB-SFO.

It will possible to start direct flight from DXB-CCS-BOG but, this is fifth freedom local traffic rights. Because the aircraft doesn't do nonstop from DXB-BOG. Due to weight restrictions.

You are right that congestion issues in the 7 - 9 am departure bank are forcing EK to be more creative in scheduling, but there is still no reason to have the aircraft on the ground in BCH for almost 5 hours. The flight could return to DXB 2 hours later and arrive at 11 pm, at which time there are no congestion issues and when also other earlier European inbounds are arriving.

I would not be surprised at all if at some point we hear about an intercontinental tag to the BCN flight.

Emirates boosts Paris double decker service

Dubai: 1 hour and 50 minutes ago

Emirates plans to launch a second A380 service to Paris from the beginning of next year by deploying its double decker on flights EK 075 and 076 in response to an overwhelming demand on this European route.

Dubai's national carrier currently serves Paris with 18 weekly flights, operated with an Airbus A380 and Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

“Our decision to commit a second A380 on the Paris route is a clear sign of potent demand from travellers who wish to fly with Emirates and enjoy our superior product offering,” remarked Salem Obaidalla, Emirates’ senior vice president, Commercial Operations, Europe & Russian Federation.

“This will be only the second European destination after London Heathrow where we have multiple A380 services each day and one of only a handful on our entire network,” he stated.

"The largely French-produced Emirates’ A380 has created a loyal following around the world since it was introduced to the airline’s fleet in July 2008. Despite its size – over 24 metres high and a wing span of nearly 80 metres – the A380 is surprisingly quiet."

"The aircraft generates less than half the noise of a Boeing 747 on take-off and uses the very latest fuel-efficient technology," he added.

Emirates started A380 services to Paris Charles de Gaulle in December 2009, replacing one of the then double daily flights with the airline’s flagship aircraft. A daily flight to Nice takes to 25 its total current number of flights into France each week.

The new A380 EK 075 service will leave Dubai at 3pm and arrive in Paris at 7.30pm. On return EK 076 will take off from Paris at 9.05pm and land in Dubai at 6.40am the next day.

The A380 capacity boost on the Paris route will further stimulate trade between the UAE and France, which currently runs into billions of US dollars each year, said Obaidalla.

“The Dubai-Paris route is one of our top markets worldwide and we are committed to further developing this route and our France operations to provide even more convenience to French travellers and exporters,” he added.-TradeArabia News Service
