I haven't heard anything regarding the stop of CPT services. In fact the B77W has regularly been substituting the B772ER on the CPT service in the last 3 months. The Emirates operational system still shows daily flights to CPT. They will upgrade as planned to B77W on a permanent basis effective 1 Dec 2008. And they will upgrade to B77W featuring lie-flat seats in J effective 1 Mar 2009. I'd be surprised if CPT is pulled now given that we're entering the seasonally stronger part of the year for South Africa services. Nothing new has emerged re Durban. It still remains deferred.

Durban is a can waiting to be opened there are no current international flights out of durban meaning a transit through JNB which everyone hates. Durban is called "south africa's playground" due to all the sporting activities and beaches that they possess. The winter there is better than the summers in most countries which sees a lot of tourists coming here. EK have done their research on durban and ill be surprised if they dropped it considering they would be a monopoly when it comes to international flights out of durban (ex mauritius and mozambique). And dont for get freight aswell. with the airport at sea level it looks likely that freight could come via durban rather JNB and also considering durban has the biggest shipping port aswell.

Plus with Durban's relatively short runway (for widebody internationals), if anyone's to provide a decent service to the Northern hemisphere it's got to be Emirates. I'm not sure how well any widebody would perform from an 8,000ft runway non-stop to London etc.

exactly, with the planned usage of an A332. it would be perfect. emirates would actually kill it and be rolling in money. and by 2010 the new airport will be open which is A380 ready and has a 3700m runway capable of handling pretty much all aircraft. In the past durban did have international routes to london and singapore on SQ and BA but when the local government got out of hand pretty much everything went to JNB. Durban is at sea level meaning less fuel needed for take off when compared to JNB which is at altitude. emirates costs would be less on the route, and thay could send all cargo to durban rather than JNB therefore reducing costs substantially

on the emirates website it still shows durban as a "coming soon" surely if they werent interseted in the route they would have removed that status. if someone with inside info could just help me out here, would be highly appreciated. all us durbanites are going crazy at home. any info whatsoever, is it on, is it off, delayed till new airport opening??? I know someone here can give me some sort of clue

this isnt a political or personal feelings forum, remember noone here is dissing your country so if you got nothing nice to say about SA dont say it. im proud to be a south african.lived here my whole life had my encounters with crime but what country doesnt. if it were so bad we wouldnt be seeing hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. this is flyertalk not "I HATE SA". GO BUILD A BRIDGE AND GET OVER IT

The UAE and Nigeria are revising the air service agreement between the two countries. New destinations that will be added to Emirates network potentially in 2009/10 include Abuja (ABV) and Kano (KAN). Emirates will also look to operate a 2nd daily to LOS.

The African market is just waiting to be exploited. Currently, most African states rely on carriers such as Royal Air Maroc, Egyptair, Ethiopian and South African to give them access to larger worldwide networks. Certain European carriers serve various cities but these are clearly suitable for Europe/North America bound traffic only. Few sub-Saharan carriers have developed networks which is a shame, since Dubai is a relatively large O&D market anyway. Many cities are in need of reliable air links that would not only capture the market but stimulate demand and boost tourism.

True, the African-Asian axis is a market full of potential, but is the yield there when other places are yet to be exploited? TAAG Angola are launching a Luanda-Beijing/Gunangzhou from their oil rich captial. Similarly, Nigeria has oil & goods potential. Otherwise, yields may not necessarily mean Africa is a goldmine waiting to be dug up. Otherwise somewhere like Morroco (daily A343 to Casablanca) with it's arabic heritage would be amazing profitable.

Jet Boy hasn't posted on this thread since the 16th September, so I've decided my suspicions have a sound basis, and he was pulling this info out of the same place he keeps his Skywards card.

Well, not quite :P

But given the list I got was no longer confidential because I noticed someone posted it already, so year, I got the info that LTN, CPH is to be launched, NGO to get 345 back, and MAN is to be 2-class A380 destination.

I have to say that this whole thread has gone way off topic. It's about new routes for Emirates.

There are plenty of places that I've been life that I have no wish to go back to. And living in London, there are times when I don't wish to be here either!

Can everyone just please calm down and carry on with the discussion about new routes?
