El Al is currently matching tier status for people with status on Continental, Lufthansa, British Airways, Delta, and Turkish. The terms include:
Free registration
Tier match for 6 months
Up to 800 points worth $800 (no clue how you actually get these bonus points)
Seems to include some form of fast track to re-qualify which isn't outlined.
As someone who has gotten as close as 350 points from initial qualification for PL, which is enough for re-qualification, and was denied a bump up to PL, I'm a bit miffed.

I would imagine Platinum, possibly even Top Platinum

In fact I would even argue that BA Gold's should be matched to Platinum as it really is the equivalent in many ways, while BA Silver would equal LY Gold.
Fact is out of all the airlines they mention only LH have a proper equivalent to Platinum really.
I am also surprised that BD are not included considering they are about to be a major competitor to LY on the LHR route.
It would seem that this is only for new members, and how many people in Israel would be top status in another airline and not even a vanilla Matmid member?
It seems you need to go through a Travel Agent for this.
Well, I don't have any Matmid membership (objected to paying joining fee and creditted my few LY flights to Qantas). I have applied for status match as Top Platinum, via my travel agent. Let's wait and see...

I think that EL-AL's Latest actions really made to bring new customers
without investing on the existing one...
Assume you are HON, You "Move" to EL-AL, Get Top-Platinum,
Your old status in LH stays with your points... But on any flight you will
do in EL-AL you will be upgraded before GL, or PL... which means
"old" members will simply get f***ed.
Also it means you need only 4000points to be Top Platina for 1.5 Years
while normally you need 10k points for 1year if you are a real loyal ff in
EL-AL...
This all FF of EL-AL is getting on my nerve, EL-AL is doing whatever
they want, I personally know on a flight where someone which was not
even PL was no. 1 in upgrade list while a TPL was no. 2...

For those of you who can't read that it says that customers joining through this status match will not be immediately entitled to last minute upgrades. The following sentence says that the standard rules apply. This essentially means that anyone having his status matched will still need a minimum of 1000 base points from travel in the last 12 months in order to obtain an upgrade and of course the number of points in the account will be another point to determine priority.
All that said, it is true ebzed that if you are gold and someone has been matched to platinum then provided he/she has at least 1000 points, then all other things being equal (such as class of ticket) they will receive priority over you.
As to your last point ebzed about someone without PL status being first in line for an upgrade ahead of a TPL, until recently that could have happened in the case where for example a GL purcahased a Y class ticket whereas the TPL an S class ticket. That has now changed when recently ELAL decided that status will be the first point of priority over class of ticket. So such cases now are not likely to happen anymore.
Just to confirm that it looks like it works well. I have just had my status match confirmed to Top Platinum. Only took a day or two. Quite excited to try it out!
I'm a bit green on LY upgrade priorities - do I understand correctly that I need to get 1000 points, then I will be first in line for reduced price upgrades?
