How to Use Matmid Point for Best Value

As a frequent flyer on El Al I've accumulated a large number of point and some will be expiring later in the year. I don't want to loose them. But I do want to make sure I use them effectively. Examples of questions that come to mind are:
1. should they be used for upgrades or full purchase?
2. what impact does the above decision have on tier point earning (retaining status).
3. Best to save them for other family members (though they son't have any status so assume the redemption value is less)?

etc.

1 Its hard to use points for upgrades. You need to have a ticket in an upgradeable class. If you do so this is good value.
long haul premium class is ideal followed by long haul economy

2using points has no impact on status. But, if you use the points for buying tickets for family and pay money for your ticket then you will gain status points

If you have flycard then redemption rates are a little better

So you're saying that buying an upgradable ticket and using points for the upgrade is more costly than just using points for the whole ticket?

Usually cheap Business class ticket is similar to full flex economy. So if you add the points is costs more.

If you have a large amount going to expire and you don't have a chance to use them for flights etc. you can convert them to a fueling\shopping card.

Each 1 point is 1.5 NIS for purchases in Dor-Alon\Megga

one way

One more option for good use of points is one-way redemption. (Like most ff programs)
