LY Flying Around Italian Mainland
I came across what seems to be a rather strange flight path on LY 396 from MAD to TLV that avoids flying over the Italian mainland and instead flies south of Sicily. Map is
here. Are there ATC reasons for this?

Can't see something really unusual here. There are numerous variables in ATC management that often one could discern "unusual" routes.

Looking at this map it looks like they were following relatively expected airways from southern Sardinia to near Malta and then turning east.
