Dollar or Hertz at HNL

Dear all,

I am planning to rent 17 days full-size car in HNL in April.

Reading many negative service stories about Hertz in HNL and that Hertz gold makes no difference.

I have no Dollar Express status, however a price quote at the same price level as Hertz. Therefore I do appreciate suggestions about service and car conditions in HNL.

Hertz and Dollar are right next to each other in the on-airport car rental area. It's essentially a long building that the agencies co-occupy. There's really no difference in service amongst the various on-airport agencies. I just walk across the main access road from the main terminal to the car rental place. I don't bother with the courtesy van, unless I use an off-airport company like Alamo or Enterprise.

There is no such thing as Dollar Express status--you're either Express or not (it's a free program, so if you're not, you should sign up). Either way, your rental should be pre-done and ready when you get there.

Actually, one of my coworkers is at Dollar HNL right now (literally JUST picked up his Jeep Wrangler Rubicon) and just told me they had excellent service. He said he had no complaints whatsoever.

The Hertz line seem to take twice as long as the Dollar line. I always go with Dollar in HNL

Any recent experience at HNL? The yelp ratings for this location are pretty brutal.

I have never rented at Dollar before. Normally I rent from Hertz, but they are sold out of minivans and the Dollar rate is significantly cheaper than the competition. But I would not be happy if they cannot deliver the promised vehicle type, or try to add garbage charges for cleaning, etc.

I'm picking up a full-size there Monday, and can report then. I couldn't turn down the rate, which is a full $50 less (week rental) than my corporate National rate and coupon.
