Yes, in n out makes a great hamburger. Also noteworthy is the cleanliness of the restaurant and their outstanding employees. I'm always amazed at how friendly and efficient they are.

Supposedly they pay well... for a hamburger joint. $11/hr.
Agree completely. Not as big as In & Out and, therefore tougher to find, but way, way better, IMO.
The once I tried them, I liked them a lot. But by the prices and the size of the burger I got, they were sort of in-between fast food and "sit-down diner" - rather like Nation's. Whereas In'n'Out is firmly in the "fast food" camp

It allows them to be picky about who they hire.
Ah...that would explain it. Their employees, along with the cleanliness of the store, make the in n outs much more appealing to me than the usual hamburger chains.
Back when I was in HighSchool (90's) and they opened up in my town they had a line around the block of people coming for applications. Pretty much everyone under 30 was hoping for a burger flipper job there.
I live in DEN so it is a rare treat to get an In-n-Out...but to give you a sense of my dedication...last year I landed at LAX from HKG...I cleared customs ...grabbed a cab and made him wait at in-n-out (cabbie says this is common) and came back to eat my burger fries and shake on the floor of the american check-in area.

Yes...it really is that good
That is dedication! I'm from DEN too, but I think Good Times is WAY better than In N' Out!
I tried In N Out last year in LA in Hollywood area and thought it was great. Felt safe too as there were about 12-15 cops in and out while I was there.
Saw a Fat Burger in LAS but did not try it.
Will tho when I am next in LAS possibly November 2009 or April 2010

Fat Burger closed in downtown SBA. While I have to say I prefer In & Out there is also a warm spot in my heart (and cholesterol score, i am sure) for Fat Burger. Our routine involved Fat Burger after a night of drinking. They had a burger with a fried egg on it. Yum- and the Fat Fries, of course.
Every once in awhile my wife or I will yell out- for no good reason- "Fat Burger, Fat Fry!" That is what the guy working the register would yell back to the grill.

I brought back a bunch of In-N-Out Burgers last year for an office pot-luck. Let's just say that my director still talks about it as the greatest pot-luck she's had in her 12 years at the company.
Can't wait to be back in Las Vegas in two weeks and have another In-N-Out Burger...haven't had one since the end of May

Maybe next time (if the office is large enough) they can rent the In-N-Out trailer and have a full feast with everything but the milkshakes!
I am trying to figure out how to get my paws on one in the near future myself (possibly another 3 hour connection in LAX )
4 of us were at the LAX location last night - if it was my first visit to one, I'd probably never go back. Everyone's burgers were really dried out, and the fries bordered on underdone. I'm not In-N-Out's biggest fan, but 2 of the 4 love the place, and really didn't like their meals all that much.
