New Haven has some really terrific pizza, I have to say. It's quasi-New York style, I would say. The New York pizza I've had doesn't even shake a stick at New Haven's best.

And I'm a die-hard Chicago pizza guy myself. NY pizza is just second-rate. But New Haven, while it's thin crust, beats the heck out of NY style.

So New Haven gets two entries, but the East Bay's Zachary's Pizza does not make the list?

http://flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=486506

Any comments from FTers who can compare Zachary's to some of the entries on the list?

I am curious what constitutes a great pizza place.
The pies only? ambience? good beer selection? (and no I dont wanna hear about wine with pizza)
I know of several small pizza places that I reallt enjoy that I am sure would never get a look at by restaurant critics.

Berkeley boy here.

Shattuck's pizza does not even come close to Zach's and Zach's although good, is not what pizza is capable of being. Going to have to vote against either for a top ten list, in support of my friends in both Chicago and New York, the only two cities in my own opinion where it is reasonable to say the best pizza comes from.

If in Berkeley, go to Arinell's on Shattuck and get a real slice a la New York. Best pizza in the Bay Area and has been for 25 years.

Gino's East!

I like Gino's East of Chicago. They have a really flavorful deep dish pizza. I live in Southern California, and I can't find anything as good as a nice thick pie from Gino's East.

What's interesting is that my best friend (who is a county restaurant inspector) told me the difference is the health codes here prohibit using the same type of brick ovens they use in Chicago.

the authors only spoke about the pie really. I was at Wells Brothers in Racine this past Saturday and IMO would be a place that restaurant critics would overlook.

I agree about wine with pizza comment, no thank you for this pizza lover.

Hard to believe that a top ten list would only have 1 NYC joint. How about the original Ray's?

As for Chicago style, Carmen's in Evanston is fabulous. Not a tourist joint.

Pizza is such a personal thing I don't know how the list can really be made. My favorite is a Vermont pizza place called Leonardo's. I hate white flour and try not to eat it. Leo's has a great whole wheat pizza crust.

I couldn't tell you the names of the best pizza places I have eaten. One I recall was in Waterbury CT and seated maybe 5 diners at a time. It was best to buy a slice and stroll.

My repeat-visit favorites are Canta Napoli and Sorrento in West Springfield MA, but it's not like I've been to every place in the universe to compare.

I have to agree here. I find it worthwhile to fly to Chicago just to get this pizza. (OK, the MR doesn't hurt either -- actually more of a segment run)

I went to college right across the street from Punch in St. Paul - it's good, but wouldn't make my top 10 list. For thin-crust pizza in a wood-burning oven, I much prefer Pizzeria Paradiso in DC.

For a big, hearty, cheesy pizza, I'm partial to Filippi's Pizza Grotto in San Diego. There are several locations now but the original one in Little Italy is the best - don't be put off by the long line snaking out the door, it goes fast and gives you time to look at all the authentic Italian goodies in the deli section while you wait.

Zachary's pizza is awesome.

When I lived in Berkeley, I subsided off the stuff
