I recently tried their 14 Caribbean cask (finished in rum barrels) and found it awfully light-bodied for a 14-year Scotch. I'll have to see if I like the doublewood better.

I'm not quite a beginner, I like the island/peaty malts, normally Caol Ila, Talisker, Bowmore, so I grabbed a bottle of HP as I understand that it's along those lines, although maybe a bit sweeter.

Should I stock up? And should I get a few Auchentoshan as well? What do people think of them?

[and I'm off mid-week drinking, so can't taste the HP until the weekend ]
I should have stocked up. Finished the HP over the weekend, and wished that I'd cleared the shelf...

Run, don't walk back to the place, recalling the old maxim:

"It may not get better in the bottle, but ye'll nae see its like again...."

Good to know. The 14 Year Caribbean cask wasn't on my list but if you try the Doublewood you should enjoy it.

Which Doublewood age do you recommend? I'm hoping the younger (12 year) given the price differential to the 17 year.

I have to retract some of what I said about the Caribbean Cask 14; I tried it again this week, and though I still think it's too sweet, too smooth, and too light-bodied for a 14-year-old Scotch, I do actually like it. I just wouldn't pay $75 for it again (which is what it goes for in VA; I got it on sale for $65 or so). I'd say it has either a bit too much rum cask finish (overpowering the Scotch itself), or not enough (as it's not so dominant, unlike, say, Angel's Envy Rye, which I really like but which is unlike any other rye I've had as the finish dominates). Confusing, eh?

I know what you mean about things not meeting your expectations. I have a bottle of Macallan 25 and it's good but it's not quite the way I remember it from a few years back.

Thanks--I will have to give it a shot. It's regularly available around here for under $70, which puts it on my radar. The 17 is IIRC around $160.

The 12? Yikes. It's under $40 here for a 750 ml. I think I saw it for $37.99 or something like that the other day.

Yep, just saw it yesterday when browsing the Scotch section of the ABC. I will look for it outside the DC metro area!

North Carolina single-malt whiskey: https://www.defiantwhisky.com/spirit/

Not terrible, but not very complicated.

I had no idea my home state was producing this. I'll have to look into it.

I actually prefer the 10 but for $26, I could drink the 12. The HP 10 is our house Scotch.
