An interesting however assuming not unique scenario.
I am an FO with an AMEX Plat card and hit my spend during the last week of December for the 10k MQM's. The charges did post all during the 2012 year. This actually puts me to be a GM with my rollover from 2012.
Delta, AMEX, and most importantly FlyerTalk :-) state that the MQM's go toward my 2012 earning year, however AMEX states the miles will not post until after my statement billing date, around January 15th 2013. I have a round-trip next week, obviously prior to the 15th date.
Since these MQM's are technically for 2012, and the status would be for the 2013 year, would I retroactively receive additional miles for the flights?
I understand that all the other benefits that would go along with GM wouldn't be there, as the status would not exist at the time of flying.

I think the answer is no.
Sorry.

I don't need (or want) to buy any MQMs. I hit the spend threshold for 2012 to get the bonus 10k MQMs, and that will bump me to a GM with the miles I already earned during 2012.
Since the MQMs post for the 2012 qualification year, I just didn't know if things were retroactive.

I am pretty sure the AMEX T&C's expressly state that it applies when they post not when the are earned. Someone here surely is better situated to answer that definitively than I am.

I assumed they were not.
Thanks for all the responses!
I don't think that your 10K MQM bonus will go towards your 2012 MQM accrual, as they posting date is after the close of the calendar year. It is my belief that you should expect to be FO in 2013 until you reach 50K MQMs based on rollover, your AMEX bonus and any flying that you do.

Any insight would be appreciated.
Not sure if I understand your question fully, but here's a shot: Once your statement processes your GM status will be updated - MQMs will post w 'activity date' 12.31.12, giving you GM status for 2013. Are you asking if the extra mileage credit (GM vs FO bonus miles) for those flights taken prior to 1.15 will post retroactively? Why not just call DL after the fact to ask if they can reinstate the bonus miles?
I once had to get FO status reinstated after March 1 because my AMEX MQM bonus had not been applied correctly in January, which I didn't realize until my status went to nothing. Calls to both DL & AMEX got it fixed straight away. I don't think I had flown yet that year so I can't say from experience if you would have luck getting the bonus miles retroactively - but it can't hurt to ask, even if they say no. Good luck!
(apologies if I misunderstood your query - I got it that you understand your status will be updated once the MQMs post, but thought your point was about the bonus miles for flights taken prior to GM status hitting your account officially)
ETA: I have had several years in the past where I met the AMEX spending threshold in late December which was reflected on my January statement, with the bonus miles posted with an activity date 12.31 the prior year. At least one of those years it bumped me from FO to GM. Unless the T&C of AMEX bonus MQMs has changed in the last year, the OP should have no problem seeing the MQMs reflected for 2012 & GM status posted. There have been a number of threads on this subject in the last month which the OP could check for newer information as this did not apply to me this year so I didn't read all the related threads. OP please ignore my comments if information is out of date.

Reason: update based on other comments
On most occasions, bonus miles and MQMs received are based on your status at the time of the flight. So if your status still shows FO by the time of your flight, then you will earn FO miles.
For comparison purposes, if you make the next level of status in the middle of a trip. Bonus miles and MQMs aren't retroactively given to you even though technically the next status has been achieved. Once the change of status is reflected on your DL account, then you start earning appropriately.
The difference between flying and amex is that when you earn status by flying, your status is reflected within a couple days. With amex, your status is reflected based on your statement closing date. So if you hit your spending threshold early on in your statement, you may have to wait nearly a month before you receive the MQMs and subsequently, your change in status and the benefits along with it.
I believe, this is the same in your situation. Even though you have made the next status level by reaching the amex threshold, it won't be reflected on DL until your amex statement closes. So any flying done before then will still be earning FO miles.
You can always call amex and delta and hope they will give you retroactive credit, but during the rest of the year when it comes to meeting the amex threshold that subsequently bumps you up a level in status, you usually have to wait until the amex statement close date for delta to recognize your new status.

Really? I've made status on a trip yet not gotten the benefits of the new status since it wasn't reflected on DL yet on the return flight. No retroactive credit.
I guess that's my experience. If that is not correct, then sorry for the bad comparison.
