One day delay on international flt

Got a message this morning that my outgoing flight was going to be delayed (agent could not tell the reason) and I would therefore miss my connecting flight. tPE-NRT-MSP. I could stay over night in NRT or simply not start my trip until tomorrow which is what I chose. In doing a search, it appears some feel compensation is appropriate and others feel that is just the way it goes. Would appreciate suggestions as to the current thinking. Two other family members are traveling with me. I doubt Delta would be impressed that I may not get to watch our WI Badger football team win the Rose Bowl!!

travel insurance would cover trip delay. hope you didn't leave home without it.

Unfortunately, in a case like this, "covering" the delay usually doesn't extend to getting the OP home in time to see the Rose Bowl if Delta is unwilling to reroute them. Or does your travel insurance allow you to buy a walkup fare to ensure your timely arrival?

Travel insurance is unlikely to cover this kind of delay. It also doesn't really cover airfare unless you needed medical evac, rejoin tour/cruise, or the carrier went out of business. A simple MX/WX isn't going to be a covered peril.

Travel insurance will cover hotel rooms for airline delays, but it sounds like DL was willing to cover hotel in NRT (probably in Narita City, so don't get your hopes up for a lot of sight seeing.)

If you really needed to get home I would 1) Figure out who else could get you to NRT in time, 2) ask to be accommodated on another flight. 3) Since you're a silver i wouldn't hold your breath. At least for EU flights you'd have EU/261 comp to work with.

So, do you deserve comp? If this wasn't a WX related delay then yes. You'll likely get miles or a cert.

Looks like the flight arrived NRT at 2:38 pm and the connection to MSP department at 3:20 pm. Would have been close. I'm surprised they wouldn't offer to reroute you through another city...perhaps LAX and you could catch the game!

My point exactly--the generic travel insurance covers things that are already covered by the airline or not unreasonably expensive (e.g., a hotel for a night of wx delay). I think it's cheaper to self-insure unless you're REALLY on a shoestring budget where an extra hotel night will bankrupt you. This is usually my reaction to all the suggestions to claim against travel insurance--usually, that doesn't get you the result you really want, assuming your goal is to see the Rose Bowl and not just be reimbursed for a $150 hotel night

I hate to admit it, since I think status is overrated, but I think this is definitely a case where being a top-tier elite would give you more room to insist on OAL routing. OTOH, you can just buy a full-fare ticket ("self-insurance") and status be damned

Just to clarify, I would be watching the Rose Bowl on TV in WI. The best I can tell is there was no weather delay as everything is fine here in Taipei.

Travel insurance is rarely worth the money UNLESS there is a big cruise or some other big unchangeable expense involved. Travel insurance is up there for most people in terms of wasted money of the extended warranties the big electronics chains try and sell. It's just rarely worth the money.

That stinks -- hopefully you'll be able to catch the game live. Looks like they're not having a great day in NRT. Despite good weather, a few scattered delays and now DL172 NRT-JFK just took a 3 hour delay due to maintenance.

They would likely think you were delusional and deny boarding if you told them that.

This would have been tight, but IMO it's a doable connection at NRT. I'm surprised that DL was so quick to give up on people making flights today after connecting into NRT from TPE on this flight.

DL shows time of touch down, not time at gate. NRT has two runways, if you land on the wrong runway, taxi time can be like 20 minutes. It can be past 3PM when you get off the aircraft if you are in cattle. Anyway, I think DL gave up since it is below MCT.

Agree.

OP if it was a big deal like if you'd actually has a ticket to the rose bowl i'd have bought a walk up one way to NRT on another carrier and dealt with it later to get comp from DL or insurance. For future reference.

Does Delta do that for all football games or only the Rose Bowl?
