Upgrade to X, no seat assignment? (JFK-SFO)

Im flying JFK-SFO today. I'm flying into LGA and then shuttling to JFK, so I was told I had I check in again when I arrive at JFK - to recheck my bag and get my BP. At the gate of my originating airport, I went to the podium to get my seat assigned. I received an upgrade, and they gave me the JFK boarding pass too (even though they wouldn't give it to me at check-in). I opened the Delta app then to see the upgrade list for the transcon, and There are only two of us on there with six seats remaining. I checked my transcon leg in the app, and it now lists my class as Business (X) but for seat it is greyed out and says "Not Assigned". Did I score the upgrade without entering the battlefield or am I just setting myself up for disappointment? Will I actually be sitting in Biz on my way to SFO?

FWIW, I have not been upgraded in advance on this route since 2009 give or take. Back then I did once score the upgrade with no seat assignment. It was assigned at the gate no trouble. Good luck! I have heard of them dropping some upgrades in advance during holiday weeks on the transcons.

You may have been UGed. If you want to clarify and choose a seat and the app won't let you, call or tweet.

Tweeted them because I refreshed a few min later and now I'm back in Y with no mention of even being on the upgrade list at all. Will call when I get to LGA - wheels up in a few.

Official response is not upgraded, but on the list. Still six seats available. JFK-SFO seems like a different beast - will upgrades clear before boarding, or how long do I wait?

LAX-JFK on Christmas cleared about 15 minutes before boarding.

It has happened to me a few times, always on flights between ATL and SAN for some reason. I get the advance UG notice but no seat assignment and it won't let me assign myself one online. When I call, the agent has no problem assigning me a seat. Probably the OP should have called when he saw the upgrade.

Do you mean that at XXX before your XXX-LGA flight, you were given a boarding pass for JFK-SFO with a coach seat assignment? This is confusing.

I suspect that what you're seeing with the X class but no seat is not a statement that you've been upgraded (did you get an email confirming the upgrade?) but rather a line listing that you're on the wait list or standby list for the upgrade, perhaps followed by a second line listing the flight as confirmed in coach and showing your (current actual) coach seat assignment.

Are you trying for free elite upgrades (status level?) or using miles of a SWU to support the upgrade? X would suggest a free elite upgrade, but I've noticed the two line listing of flights when I try to use a SWU.

When you get a BF UG, the app and website will never show your (UG) seat. See a DL agent for your BP.

Yep - this is consistent with my experience last week...was in 1C vice 18D for LAX-JFK.

However, the supposed upgrade didn't seem to be battlefield as it hapeed before boarding the plane at XXX. I would assume that it was a normal free elite upgrade, albeit confirmed on the day of flight. Without knowing what XXX airport is or the schedule, it's not clear that JFK-SFO was already under airport/GA control, especially given the OP's LGA-JFK transfer.
