Accidental Platinum
Oops, after carefully planning to hit only Gold this year, with 23,000 miles to roll-over for next year, I forgot all about the second tranch of 10,000 Amex MQMs! They hit my account on the 26th, so now I'll be flying Platinum back home tomorrow (the upgrades with my non-status wife already cleared) and all next year.
I was pretty sure I did not want Platinum, but now that I've got it, I guess I'll just have to enjoy the priority upgrade list. Sigh. Life sure is tough.

Yes... but before rollover. Was planning to be GM, then DL just straight up handed out 5/10/15k MQMs depending on your market. Pushed me to PM where I've been ever since. Qualified early this year, but the bulk of my revenue travel has moved away from DL and I've burned three quarters of a million miles this year, so 2013 will likely be my last year as a Plat.

I had something similar happen in 2010. Was planning on holding at PM but got more MQM than I expected from Amex and it pushed me over to DM. So went with it: canceled a TATL award ticket and bought one instead. Then bought a discount BE ticket over Thanksgiving from PIT (triple MQM!) and then there was the 25K MQM from doing a transfer from Amex MR. Ended up with a pile of rollover that I am slowly burning off. Yep, I'm a gamer.

Timed mine so ive been sitting at 49,499 MQM right now, i REALLY hope nothing unexpected posts in the next 36 hours or so!
I have no experience with this, but does Delta not do a soft-landing?
Many years ago (well, not that many years ago...this was probably 2003 or 2004), United had a policy of soft landings. So when I gave up my Premier Executive in '05, I had Premier in 2006.

Not sure what you mean by soft-landing, but as far as I know Delta requires you earn every qualifying mile or segment by Dec 31, 2012 to obtain a status level. That level is good until March 1, 2014, after which you revert back to nothing unless you re-earn by Dec 31, 2013.
If you have 49,999 they will not give you the mile that you need for the 50K Gold qualifier.
There are other posts in this forum where folks were short as little as 41 miles and no dice.
Soft Landing?
With DL ... if one does not make the status ... one falls all the way to the concrete/ kettle landing!
This hasn't always been the case. After the NW merger with DL, I flew exactly 0 EQM the next two years, yet retained elite status. Rollover had not been introduced at that time, although I had averaged about 150k EQM each year, the previous 2 years.
