Checked bags in IROPS

Hey all - looking for some advice. I was scheduled to fly through DTW tonight, but my first leg was delayed and I was going to miss my connection. When they announced the delay the pilot allowed passengers to leave the plane, so I left and got rebooked for tomorrow morning. The gate agent told me there wasn't much they could do about my checked bag, so I figured I would find it at my final destination at some point tomorrow... not too worried.

I got home and noticed the flight to DTW tonight was canceled. Tracked my bag and it has a status of "Bag in Baggage Service Office." I sort of expected it to say "Expedited on xyz (my flight tomorrow)." Should I expect the redirection to happen overnight, and not worry about it? Would it help to call DL? Or should I just go to the airport and pick up my bag from the service office right now?

I would just swing by the baggage office in the morning to pick it up and recheck it. The only potential problem, I think, would be if the baggage office isn't open as early as you're going to be there, since there may not be any arriving flights that early.

That said, if you call DL to ask what time the baggage office opens wherever you are, and they tell you that it won't be open that early, I think you need to try'n talk to someone there tonight to get it rerouted.

I think the advice from davetravels is on the mark.

The agent was wrong to say there isn't much they could do. Normally, in an Irop situation, the rebooking agent would send a recheck message to the bagroom to expedite the bag according to the new itinerary. It seems in this case that the agent either did not send the message or the message was missed by the bagroom. And, once the flight cancelled, the bag was probably deposited in the baggage office. So either an agent will get to it first and expedite it according to your new itinerary or you will get to it first and recheck it yourself.

Failing this, once DL ascertains that you did not cancel your trip (for example, as a flight in vain rather than being rebooked) after your first flight was cancelled, they should put it on flights to your destination, but this may be slower than if you can proactively fetch it and recheck it or have it rerouted. If the bag doesn't arrive with you, you file a missing bag claim at your destination and the carrier that operates your last leg will deliver it to you, but again this takes more time.

Sorry

Sorry to hear this. Do consider carry on only. I travel the world with my 22 inch with wheels and large computer bag. I purchase anything I need en route. So, IROPS and bumps are never a problem. Happy New Year.

Thanks all. I ended up going back to the airport last night to get my bag since I knew agents are there until 11 or so. Brought it with me this morning like nothing ever happened. Not sure what would have happened had I left it overnight, but I figured this was the safest option.

Doesn't work when you have to wear a different suit every day for a week or so.

Also doesn't work if travel with equipment/things not allowed in the cabin.

Also doesn't work with the OP already en route and adds no value to the real-time discussion. "For future", OK fine, but for "the now", no. We're glad for you that you are superior and don't have these problems but this doesn't help the OP with the problem at hand.

I actually think that it's helpful when people provide broader advice which is good for future similar situations. OP's post is OP-specific, but his is a situation which repeats itself in one form or another regularly.

It's true that most business travellers can make it for 10-12 days with a carry-on and it can be very helpful to people who haven't thought it through to see that it can be done.

My 2 cents.

Perhaps (hence my point '..."For future", OK fine...'), but the smug superiority of it, to the point of making the OP feel smaller at the time, is something we see too much of on these forums (and this DL forum in particular) and is a big reason that I (and I suspect many others) don't frequent these forums as much as I/we used to.

My $.02 reply. Agree to disagree...usefulness trumped by smugness.

Also doesn't work when you travel to places where you are bringing a tent, campstove, sleeping bag, etc.
